Boz Scaggs Background
William Royce Scaggs was born in Ohio, and grew up in Oklahoma and Texas. Both Steve Miller
and Scaggs attended the same prep school in Dallas. In 1959, Scaggs became a member of Miller's band, the Marksmen. Later
on, Miller and Scaggs studied at the University of Wisconsin together, where they gigged with the Fabulous Knight Trains and
the Ardells. In 1963, Scaggs went back to the Dallas area by himself, serving as the frontman for the Wigs. The group split
up after Scaggs moved to England. Scaggs traveled around Europe, busking on street corners. In Sweden, he cut a solo LP that
proved to be a disappointment. He came back to the U.S. in 1967, choosing San Francisco as his new home. He hooked up with
Miller once again, signing on to the Steve Miller Band. Scaggs stuck around for the band's two highly praised albums before
pursuing his own solo career. Scaggs was able to ink a deal with Atlantic with the help of Jann Wenner, publisher of Rolling
Stone. Initially, Scaggs didn't have much luck finding an audience or making a dent on the charts, despite the rave reviews
he earned from critics. Silk Degrees finally eclipsed the mainstream in 1976. The album climbed to No. 2 on the album charts
and yielded the Top 3 track "Lowdown" along with "Lido Shuffle." A year later, Down Two Then Left also garnered success and
Middle Man (1980) landed in the Top 10 as well leveraged by the tracks, "Jo Jo" and "Breakdown Dead Ahead." Scaggs dedicated
most of his time during the '80s to owning and running Slim's nightclub in San Francisco. He only made rare appearances at
the club for New Year's Eve concerts. In 1988, he made a comeback with Other Roads. Three years later he toured with Donald
Fagen's Rock and Soul Revue. In 1994, Some Change dropped followed by Come on Home and My Time: The Anthology (1969-1997)
issued three years later. Throughout the late '90s and early 2000s, Scaggs continued to put out new material. In 2012, he
took the stage on tour as a bandmate of the Dukes. He released Memphis in the spring of 2013, supporting the release with
a tour of Japan, the U.S. and Canada. The tour turned out to be a huge success with Scaggs scheduling even more live shows
in the U.S. as well as Australia in 2014.
