A member of the Missouri Valley Conference, the basketball program of the Bradley Braves has enjoyed an incredible history that includes two Final Four appearances. After going all the way to the Sweet Sixteen in 2006, the Bradley Braves are looking to find their way back to the top of the table in 2013-2014. Though they are struggling a bit this season, there are many bright spots for the team from Peoria, Illinois, including the play of stars like Senior guard Walt Lemon, Jr., who is averaging over 17 points a game. The regular season is winding down, but there are still chances to see your beloved Bradley Braves play in person before they pack it up for the season. There is a lot of excellent young talent on the roster and the fans who pack Carver Arena in Peoria are some of the best around.

Don't miss the February 22 matchup at Carver Arena against the Braves' in state rivals, the Loyola Ramblers. The Braves will have their hands full with this sharpshooting team who rarely misses and is amongst the top teams in the country in field goal percentage. Freshman phenom Milton Doyle is having an excellent season for the Ramblers with over 15 points and 4 rebounds a game. The Shockers are having an unbelievable season, proving that their road to the Final Four in last year's NCAA Tournament was no fluke. The play of the Shockers this season has shone a light on the Missouri Valley Conference, and the Braves fans will be ready and willing to help will their team to an improbable upset. Senior forward Cleanthony Early has become one of the most buzzed about players in the country, and comes in averaging almost 16 points and 6 rebounds a game. The Braves will certainly have their hands full, but Carver Arena will be full of passionate Braves fans who will be seeing their beloved team at home for the very last time this season. There is no love lost between the Bradley Braves and their in-state rivals the Illinois State Redbirds. Known as the War on 74 because of the Highway 74 that connects the two school, the War on 74 has been a bit lopsided in Illinois State's favor over the years, especially when they play in Normal, where the Redbirds have won 7 straight. This season, the home teams split the War on 74, with Bradley stopping a 4 game slide in Peoria. There is no love lost in this rivalry, and the fans show how strong their school spirit is when the rivals come to town.

Bradley Braves NBA Players

For a small school tucked away in the Missouri Valley Conference, the Braves basketball team has enjoyed a lot of postseason success and have seen many great players don the Red and White. A few have moved on to play professionally at the next level including NBA All Star forward Hersey Hawkins, who played in the NBA from 1988-2001. Hawkins was a 2 time All Missouri Valley Conference Player, who was voted National College Player of the Year in 1988 when he averaged an amazing 36.3 points per game for the Braves. The sixth overall selection in the 1988 NBA draft, Hersey Hawkins if currently ranked seventh in career points college basketball history and is the pride and joy of the Bradley Braves basketball program. Hawkins found much success in the NBA, making the All Rookie First Team in 1998 with the Philadelphia 76ers and was an All Star selection in 1991. Other notable NBA players from Bradley include former first round pick of the Golden State Warriors, Patrick O'Bryant, shooting guard Anthony Parker and Roger Phegley.

From 1947-1950, Braves point guard Gene Melchiorre was the toast of the Missouri Valley Conference. He took the Braves to the NIT and NCAA Tournaments and made the All Conference Team. Scandal broke out in 1950 when it was revealed that Melchiorre and 4 of his teammates were involved in a point shaving scandal. They pled guilty and were given a slap on the wrist from the courts for cooperation. After being selected number 1 overall in the 1951 NBA Draft by the Baltimore Bullets, the commissioner of the NBA banned any players involved in point shaving from the league for life, including Melchiorre.
