Branford Marsalis Background

Growing up in New Orleans, Branford Marsalis was consistently surrounded by music. His father was a pianist and the vibrant musical culture in New Orleans became a part of Marsalis' soul, so it was no surprise that he quickly delved into the world of jazz. Before discovering his passion for jazz, however, Marsalis was more interested in R&B, but once he enrolled at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Marsalis focused his attentions on the saxophone and explored the captivating sound of jazz. In 1980, Branford and his brother, Wynton, joined Blakey's Jazz Messengers, and Marsalis became known for playing tenor and soprano sax, making him one of the most sought after artists in the world of jazz. He released his debut album, Scenes In the City, in 1984, and his explosive reputation soon led to collaborative projects with Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie.

After cementing his position in the world of jazz, Marsalis decided to helm his own musical project—the Branford Marsalis Quartet. The group consisted of bassist Bob Hurst, pianist Kenny Kirkland, and drummer Jeff Watts. The quartet started performing all over the world, drawing massive crowds to whichever venue they performed at. For years, Marsalis was a major figure in the jazz scene, but it wasn't until he scored a gig on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno that he became a mainstream star. Even though he was only with The Tonight Show for a few years, it helped propel his career into the spotlight, and soon Branford Marsalis was pocketing Grammy Awards and selling out some of the most prestigious concert venues in the world. There is no denying the fact that Branford Marsalis is an incredibly talented jazz musician, and his growing stack of awards and accolades is just one small bit of support for this fact.
