Branford Marsalis was born on August 29th, 1960 in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana to a very musical family. His father, Ellis Louis Marsalis, Jr. was a music professor and a pianist who found moderate success as a jazz musician, and his brothers, Jason Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis, Ellis Marsalis III, and Delfeayo Marsalis all followed in their fathers footsteps. It was only a matter of time before Branford Marsalis evolved into the supremely talented musician that he is today. His first foray into a professional career playing the saxophone was during his tenure at the prestigious Berklee College of Music when he was invited to perform on a European tour as part of an ensemble cultivated by drummer Art Blakey. He continued to work with fellow students from Berklee College of Music until his graduation in 1981.

Once Branford Marsalis had left university, he joined forces with some of the most iconic members of the jazz community, including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and his brother Wynton Marsalis. In 1985 he collaborated on Sting's debut solo record The Dream of the Blue Turtles and remained an important member of his studio band well into the late 1990's. He began to branch out into other mainstream forms of media as well, leading The Tonight Show Band on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno from 1992 to 1995, during which he drew enough national attention to further his career as a performer.

At the close of the 1990's, Marsalis shifted his focus from solo work and session recording to a new project-- The Branford Marsalis Quartet. Along with drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts, bassist Eric Revis, and pianist Joey Calderazzo, Branford Marsalis began working his way across the country and the world on exhaustive tours and spent countless hours in the recording studio. The quartet's hard work paid off, and they were awarded a Grammy Award in 2001 for their album Contemporary Jazz. Branford Marsalis continues to tour with his quartet and as a solo act-- Don't miss your opportunity to experience a living legend when he performs in your town!
