Bud Walton Arena History

First opened in the early 1990s, Bud Walton Arena has become nothing short of an iconic part of the local sports scene around the Fayetteville, Arkansas area, mostly thanks to the Razorbacks of Arkansas University. Bud Walton Arena has been the backdrop for some huge games over the years, for both men's and women's basketball, and there is always hope of a very bright future thanks to the steady stream of hoops talent that comes to town.

And even though the Arena got going only in 1993, it didn't exactly take long for it to become a major staple of the local community, as it didn't hurt to have the National Champions playing their home games on campus at Bud Walton Arena. The Razorbacks took down Duke to win the National Championship back in 1994, with Corliss Wiliamson leading the way as the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player. These days, once you're there in the stands, you'll understand loud and clear why so many people love turning up to Bud Walton Arena to see all of the action up close and personal.

Bud Walton Arena Trivia

Do you know that Bud Walton Arena is named after the co-founder of Wal-Mart?

Thanks to a hefty donation from a guy who has a few nickels, Bud Walton Arena broke ground in 1992 with the goal of becoming the premier place in Arkansas to see a big basketball game. And, just like Wal-Mart, you can find a little bit of everything, as this arena with a capacity of more than 19,000 is never exactly lacking in excitement.

And did you know that the Razorbacks nearly made it back-to-back back in the 1994-1995 season?

Yup, though everyone remembers the Championship team from 1993-1994, the Razorbacks nearly got all the way back to the top of college basketball the following year, giving their fans another amazing run as they soared through the popular year-end Tournament. Even though they didn't actually take down the title for a second straight year, they still were nearly flawless at home – particularly in conference play – and they were able to cement their legacy as one of the powerhouses of the elite SEC conference. These days, you can still find the same level of passion at Bud Walton Arena as fans get ready to watch their team build back into a champion thanks to their continually strong program.
