Buffy Sainte-Marie was born in Saskatchewan, Canada in 1941 and was orphaned at a young age. She was adopted by relatives and grew up in Massachusetts, where she eventually attended the University of Massachusetts to study teaching and Oriental philosophy. It was in college that she first became more serious about her music. Buffy had played both the guitar and piano throughout her childhood and teenage years, so by the time she had graduated from college, she had already written some of her best songs, such as "Ananias" and "Now That the Buffalo's Gone".

By the time she was in her early 20s, Buffy had developed a thirst for performing and creating music. She started touring as a solo act all over the country, stopping at folk music festivals and various concert halls to showcase her work. She also performed at numerous Native American reservations, as much of her work focused on the issues faced by indigenous people in both Canada and America. Just a few short years into her career, Buffy was already regarded as one of the most talented songwriters in music. Some of her songs were covered or recorded by artist like Janis Joplin, Chet Atkins, Taj Mahal, Neil Diamond, Elvis Presley, and Barbara Streisand.

Whether she was performing her popular war protest song, "Universal Solider", or cranking out songs about the plight of Native Americans, Buffy Sainte-Marie was regarded as one of the most influential social figures of her time. Her reputation as a social activist and a folk artist has remained strong throughout the decades, and her timeless songs are as relevant today as they were in the '60s. For her work, Buffy has earned countless awards and honors, such as a Gemini Award, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and the prestigious Governor General's Performing Arts Award.
