Buffy began her life on an Indian reserve in Canada. She was abandoned by her parents and later adopted by Albert and Winifred Saint-Marie who were related to her birth parents. Despite a rough beginning, Saint-Marie flourished in school and eventually earned two degrees from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, graduating in the top ten of her class. She returned to the reserve in Canada for a Powwow where she was welcomed with open arms. She saw the plight of the Native Americans, and was inspired to write music that brought this issue to the forefront. After college, she began honing her skills as a musician and playing alongside big-name stars like Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young in folk music festivals and on Native American reservations. Her music was covered by musicians of all genres and she became a well-known songwriter in the 70s and 80s. She best known for co-writing the song "Up Where We Belong" that was featured in the hit movie "An Officer and a Gentleman." The song earned the singer an Academy Award and a host of other accolades.
