Bumbershoot Festival Tickets - Bumbershoot Festival Tour Dates

Bumbershoot Festival Schedule

There are a handful of blowout music festivals across the country that bring music fans flocking from all corners of the nation to come down and camp at a huge venue for an entire weekend at a time. The Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle, Washington is one of them. As one of the best known music festivals in America, Bumbershoot draws some huge names as headliners for the weekend-long show that takes place every Labor Day weekend. There is only one weekend a year that Bumbershoot takes over Seattle, and that weekend is a huge one for Seattlites. Labor Day weekend is automatically crossed off on calendars as a reserved weekend for live music and entertainment in Seattle, and the Bumbershoot Festival is to thank, as the music fest draws in record crowds every year for the big soiree.

Bumbershoot Festival Trivia

The annual Bumbershoot Festival takes place at the Seattle Center on 74 acres of land, but was the venue built for the music festival? Although it is the perfect place for an event of such caliber, the Seattle Center was not in fact built for the Bumbershoot Festival but rather for the World's Fair, as the Seattle Center first came around as part of the 1962 World's Fair. During the event in 1962, the Seattle Center saw nearly 10 million people traverse throughout the city, and the event also known as the Century 21 Exposition, which was held from April 21, 1962 to October 21, 1962, was one of the defining events in Seattle history. After the World's Fair in 1962, the Seattle Center was expanded and further construction was done, and today the park that encompasses the Space Needle brings thousands of live music fans together for the huge live music event known as Bumbershoot.

Bumbershoot Festival Background

The Bumbershoot Festival dates back to 1971, when the first edition of the music fest, then known as the Mayor's Arts Festival, took place at the Seattle Center. Named after a term for the umbrella (fitting, as the event takes place in the notoriously rainy city of Seattle), the Bumbershoot Festival's first edition brought out 125,000 patrons. Even from its beginnings, Bumbershoot brought out several eclectic elements, including body painting, interpretive dance, arts and crafts, light shows, and more. The '70s prompted days-long Bumbershoot Festivals and all kinds of different concepts, with a hippie-esque feel to the live music and entertainment. The live acts at Bumbershoot, although changing every year, remained consistent in that the festival constantly sought out regional artists, putting an emphasis on the Seattle area as the festival became synonymous with Seattle's booming arts and music scene.

Bumbershoot Festival Performers

There have been all kinds of artists perform at the Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle over the years, spanning the lengths of just about every genre and musical style. The earlier years of Bumbershoot saw artists like Emmylou Harris, Etta James and Chuck Berry perform, while the '80s saw performers like Tina Turner, the Eurythmics, James Brown and the likes. In the '90s, when Seattle's grunge rock music scene was really going off, just about every big rock band performed on stage at Bumbershoot, and recent hears have seen artists like Modest Mouse, Death Cab for Cutie, Sleater Kinney and more on stage at the weekend-long music festival. Even hip-hop music acts eventually made it to the stage at Bumbershoot, with artists like De La Soul and Kanye West having performed at the venue. Other more offbeat performances have taken place by acts like author Chuck Palahniuk, the Pacific Northwest Ballet, the Ramones, B.B. King, Jerry Seinfeld and so many more big acts.
