Cactus Bowl History
The Cactus Bowl was first held in 1989 when it took place in Tucson
at Arizona Stadium and was known as the Copper Bowl. In 2000 the game was moved to Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe where it has
been played ever since. In addition to being known as the Cactus Bowl and the Copper Bowl the game has also gone under the
names the Insight Bowl and the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl. Last season Kansas State won the Cactus Bowl with a 31-14 victory
The Cactus Bowl always features a match up between two of the best teams in college
football, and this is due to its tie-ins with the Big Ten and the Big 12. The Big Ten is now made up of 14 teams that have
combined to win forty-six national titles in college football, making it one of the most competitive conferences in all of
NCAA football. Michigan is the conference leader with forty-two Big Ten Championships while Ohio State is second with thirty-four
and Michigan State is currently the defending Big Ten champion. Football and the Big Ten go hand-in-hand and many of the biggest
rivalries and games are found within the conference and any team that is able to make it through the grueling Big Ten schedule
unblemished is well prepared to win a national title. The Big 12 has long been known as one of the premiere college football
conferences in the country and it should be as hotly contested as ever during the 2014 season. The schools which comprise
the Big 12 are Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, Baylor, West Virginia, and Iowa State.
Last season the Baylor Bears emerged as the Big 12 champions finishing with an 8-1 conference record which put them just ahead
of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Texas who all finished Big 12 play with 7-2 records. Every game counts in the Big 12 and
there may be no recovering from an off day that results in a loss. You can expect the three teams who tied for second place
in the Big 12 in 2013 to be even hungrier this season trying to get back to the top of the conference standings while Baylor
will be looking to successfully defend its title. Each year in the Big 12 one team turns things around after an off year to
become a legitimate contender.
The pageantry and passion surrounding college football makes
it one of the most exciting sports in the world and there is no way to fully experience a game without being in the stadium
surrounded by tens of thousands of other passionate fans. Of course, all of the excitement is just ratcheted up for bowl games
and the Cactus Bowl is sure to be one of the best games of the entire season. The two teams have spent all year competing
