About Cake

Alternative rock band Cake is one of the most popular bands to come out of California's alternative rock movement from the 1990s, and the band is known for combining an eclectic mix of musical influences, including funk, rock, hip hop, country, and various ethnic music styles. The band formed in the early 90s, and they got their start in the alternative rock scene with their debut album, "Motorcade of Generosity." The album's first single, "Rock n' Roll Lifestyle," was a huge hit, and it reached the number 35 spot on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. With added exposure thanks to MTV airtime and radio play, Cake was off to a great start with their successful debut.

Returning with their sophomore album, "Fashion Nugget," Cake was poised to become a breakout band of their time. Led by the popular single "The Distance," the album eventually achieved a platinum certification, and it reached the number 1 spot on the Top Heatseekers chart with a number 36 position on the Billboard 200 chart. "Fashion Nugget" proved to be just what the band needed to advance to the mainstream, and the song "The Distance" still enjoys heavy rotation on various radio stations around the United States.

After the breakthrough success of "Fashion Nugget," Cake returned to the studio to begin working on their third album, "Prolonging the Magic," which was released in 1998. "Prolonging the Magic" marked another successful album for Cake, and it sold over 40,000 copies during the first week of its release, with an eventual platinum certification. "Prolonging the Magic" spawned the massively popular song, "Never There," which topped the Modern Rock Tracks chart. Returning in 2001 with "Comfort Eagle," Cake had scored another popular album with fans and critics. "Comfort Eagle" brought in over 70,000 copies during its first week, and it debuted at the number 13 spot on the Billboard 200 chart. A notable single from "Comfort Eagle" is the fan-favorite "Short Skirt/Long Jacket," which continues to be played on alternative rock stations.

After Cake's massive success, they created their own record label, Upbeat Records, and released their 2011 album, "Showroom of Compassion," which debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 chart, the first of Cake's albums to do so.

Cake's Breakthrough Album

When Cake released their debut album, "Motorcade of Generosity," fans of alternative music could see immediately that Cake wasn't like any other band on the scene. With their diverse range of musical influences, Cake's music resonated with tons of fans who were looking for something a little bit different. When they released their second studio album, "Fashion Nugget," Cake had the breakthrough album that they needed. "Fashion Nugget" helped propel the band to the next level with its single, "The Distance," and Cake went on to release a number of popular albums in the years that followed, including "Prolonging the Magic" in 1998, "Comfort Eagle" in 2001, "Pressure Chief" in 2004, and "Showroom of Compassion" in 2011.
