Carl Cox Background
DJ great Carl Cox got his first set of turntables
at the age of 15 and soon after started working as a mobile DJ. Disco music captured his heart initially but by the early
'80s he evolved into playing New York hip-hop, electro and groove. He was especially inspired by the "Acid Trax" tune by Phuture,
which arrived in '87. "It was then that I thought, 'This is it.' I would do my parties, and I'd play old rare groove and hip-hop
and soul and I would say 'Right you've got to hear this Phuture track' and people would just stop. It's funny because all
the people who thought I had freaked out then are the people who are making the music now," Cox said.
As a pioneer of
the sound, Cox sailed high on the volcanic British rave scene. He helped promote The Project with Paul Oakenfold; played the
opening night of Danny Rampling's iconic Shoom; and he held down a residency at the Brighton Zap Club as well as at the Sunrise
His debut single arrived in 1991. It was called "I Want You," and it scored him a Top 30 hit along with
a Top of the Pops appearance. Two more tracks of his graced the charts. Eventually, Cox readily embraced the underground sounds
of techno. "Techno drives home somewhere. It takes you to an element of surprise, not knowing where you're going. It's scary
but wonderful at the same time."
His classic releases encompass his mix, "F.A.C.T" (1995), which sold more than 250,000
copies. He also came out with "Two Paintings and a Drum" in 1996, which pierced the British Top 30.
