Having earned her degree from the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music, Caro Emerald gained life experience as one of the six singers in Les Elles, a close-harmony group, and as a vocalist in the Philharmonic Funk Foundation. Her breakthrough moment happened when she received a phone call from Jan van Wieringen and David Schreurs, Dutch producers. They were in urgent need of a demo singer, and that's when Emerald got her lucky break to record the demo, Back It Up. Because she liked the song so much, Emerald added the song to her live repertoire. A year later, she performed the song on an Amsterdam local TV station AT5. The song was contagious, and the station was flooded with calls and emails about "that lovely young girl with her catchy song." Eventually, Emerald and a friend produced a video, which found its way to YouTube, and again, the song was very well received. Once it reached the airwaves, it was an instant smash hit, placing on the Dutch Top 40 for 12 weeks, peaking at No. 12.
Caroline Esmeralda van der Leeuw is best known for her stage name, Caro Emerald. Her single, Back It Up, premiered in July 2009. Her debut album, Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor, features a blend of tangos, mambos and ballroom jazz in a contemporary production. The album trumped a record set by Michael Jackson's Thriller album, setting a new all-time Dutch album chart record of spending nearly 30 weeks in a row at the No. 1 spot. As the biggest selling album in the Netherlands for 2010 with 300,000 in sales, Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor has sold more than a million copies to date.
Inspired by music legends Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and The Andrew Sisters, Caro Emerald took home two prestigious German awards, a Goldene Kamera for Best Musik International and an Echo Award for Best Newcomer International.
