Cat Power Background
Charlyn Marie Marshall was born in Atlanta, Georgia to a blues musician and pianist, Charlie
Marshall. It's no surprise that passion for music ran through her veins, but both of her parents tried to hinder this newfound
love. After her parents separated, Charlyn (also known as Chan) was not allowed to buy records, and rarely allowed to listen
to music. Even when she moved out of her mother's house and into her father's house at age 16, she still wasn't encouraged
to follow her musical dreams. Her father, despite being a musician himself, forbade her to play his piano. Even though her
passion for music was almost destroyed by her parents, the music bug still itched in Chan. When she was 18, she bought her
first instrument—a 1950s Silvertone guitar.
She finally got out on her own and started playing music, usually
in a basement with a small group of fellow musicians. In addition to Chan, the basement jam session group consisted of Glen
Thrasher, Marc Moore, Damon Moore, and Fletcher Liegerot. The group decided to call themselves Cat Power, and started playing
local gigs in small clubs and bars.
When Chan was 20 years old, she and fellow band mate Glen Thrasher moved to New
York City, where she was exposed to a whole new music scene. Chan was immediately enamored with New York's free-jazz and experimental
music scene, both of which were hugely instrumental in helping her define her own musical sound. Chan, who stuck with the
name Cat Power when she went solo, was discovered while on tour with Liz Phair in 1994, and got her big break win 1996 when
she signed to Matador Records. Her third album, What Would the Community Think, met with much critical acclaim due to her
mature new sound as both a singer and a songwriter. Since then, Cat Power has continued to tour extensively and produce new
and genuine music. Her sound is a unique blend of folk, blues, and punk, and she has garnered a steadfast fan base from her

Do you know how Chan decided on the name
When she and her band were hard pressed to come up with a name for their band before their show that night,
a man walked into a pizza parlor wearing a hat that said "Cat Diesel Power". Right then and there, Chan decided on the name
Cat Power, and has stuck with this performing name ever since.
