About Charlie Wilson
in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Charlie exhibited an interest in music from a very young age, beginning his singing and performing career
before the age of five via his local church choir. Since then, music would remain with Charlie throughout his educational
career, with him continuing to sing into junior high school and beyond. Charlie's musical talent being showcased throughout
much of his life led him on his first venture into a true performing career, with his family band named The Gap Band.
Gap Band would be made up by three Wilson brothers, including Charlie, Ronnie, and Robert. The group would constantly venture
out of their comfort zone, pushing the boundaries of R&B and funk as they constantly experimented with genre pushing and
hip hop innovation. While Charlie would soon embark on his own solo career, The Gap Band would remain a fixture of his musical
career for most of his life, with them remaining a performing and writing group up until 2010.
Under the ambitious direction
of manager Michael Paran, Charlie would make his breakout into a successful solo career in 1997, with his first album hailing
him as the next scion of hip hop soul and putting him directly into a busy touring schedule. He would sign onto Jive Records
with a huge record deal, and headed back into the study to record alongside some of the most vaunted music makers in the business,
including Will.i.am, Justin Timberlake, and R. Kelly. His solo work earned him numerous critical accolades, with two nominations
in 2010 at the Grammys for Best R&B Male Vocal Performance and Best R&B Album.
Over the years Charlie has collaborated
with the most influential artists of this generation, including Snoop Dogg, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell, Mystikal, Beyonce,
Kanye West, and Raekwon. He remains one of the forefathers of today's R&B scene, and after forty years of performing is
showing no signs of slowing down.
One of Charlie's most memorable albums would be his mega
hit Charlie, Last Name Wilson, which dropped to much acclaim in 2005. The album would soon be certified gold, and sail to
the #10 and #3 positions on Billboard's 200 and R&B charts, respectively. The album would receive three out of four stars
from USA Today, and be carried by some of Charlie's most memorable singles to date including ""Charlie, Last Name Wilson"
and "Magic", with the latter hitting the number one spot on the Urban AC charts.
WIlson's 2013 release, Love, Charlie,
would prove once again that this R&B legend has lost none of his flavor or vitality as the album immediately climbed to
the #1 spot on the US R&B charts. The album would be produced by Emile Ghantous and Wirlie Morris, and feature the super
hits "My Love Is All I Have" and "I Still Have You".
Charlie has been a prominent member of the
African American music scene, with three nominations and one win awarded by the NAACP Image Awards. He won for Outstanding
Album for Love, Charlie, and was a runner up for Outstanding Male Artist in 2010 and 2014.
Charlie's nickname "Uncle
Charlie" was bestowed upon him by none other than the biggest name in hip hop, the artist formerly known as Snoop Dogg.
