Charlotte Knights History
is no stranger to professional baseball. The first pro baseball team established in Charlotte was the Charlotte Hornets back
in 1901. Several decades later, the Hornets were purchased by the Washington Senators (currently the Minnesota Twins), and
the Hornets soon became one of the most exciting teams in minor league baseball. In 1940, the future owner of the Senators/Twins,
commissioned the building of a 3,2000-seat baseball park in Charlotte and named it Calvin Griffith Park. For the next five
decades, Calvin Griffith Park hosted some of the most exciting games in minor league baseball, and it provided a fantastic
space for baseball fans to support their favorite team – the Charlotte Knights.
In the early 1970s, however, Charlotte's
baseball scene wilted, as the Minnesota Twins dropped their affiliation and the Hornets (who renamed themselves the Charlotte
Twins) were unable to pair up with a new major league team and disbanded. In 1976, things turned around for Charlotte baseball
when Jim Crockett Jr. purchased the Asheville Orioles and brought them to Charlotte. Over a decade later, George Shin bought
out the team and renamed them the Charlotte Knights, and baseball fans all throughout Charlotte supported the team with unwavering
enthusiasm. Charlotte has been a hub of minor league talent for over a century, and now you can support your favorite minor
