Cher Background

Cher spent most of her childhood in Los Angeles, where her single mother worked on becoming an actress. Because of her mother's career, Cher was introduced to the limelight at an early age, as she scored acting roles as an extra thanks to her mother. Unfortunately, her childhood wasn't easy, as she and her mother spent several years moving from city to city, and Cher even had to be placed in an orphanage for a few weeks because her mother couldn't afford to care for her. When she was 16, Cher dropped out of school to pursue one thing: fame. She started working to support her acting classes, and even worked as a dancer at clubs on Sunset Strip, where she was never shy about introducing herself to agents and managers. It was there that she met Sonny Bono, a local musician who hired Cher to sing backup on his tracks.

While Sonny and Cher started out as friends and creative partners, their relationship soon turned romantic, and their public romance would help launch both of their careers into the music spotlight. In 1965, the duo scored a major hit with "I Got You Babe", and they became so popular so quickly that they even earned their own television series, The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, which aired for three years in the early 1970s. The romance didn't last, though, and the couple divorced in 1975, freeing Cher to pursue her own creative endeavors. Once on her own, Cher didn't fade away from the spotlight; if anything, she made it shine even brighter on her. She had numerous musical hits with songs like "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" and "Half Breed".

Of course, Cher was not just a one-act wonder. She continued to entertain the public with her acting skills, as well, appearing in both television shows and in Broadway plays. Whether Cher was acting on a Broadway stage or through a television screen, she always knew how to captivate her audience. To this day, Cher remains one of the most talented and impressive performers in the world, and she has six decades of experience and acclaim to back her up. There's no doubt that Cher can put on a phenomenal show, as she has been doing so for decade after decade. And with her impressive repertoire of hit songs, you always know that she can put on one of the most unique shows around.

So as Cher steps out on stage at a music venue near you, make sure that you are in the audience to see this pop icon perform live.
