of The United Center
The United Center replaced the Chicago Stadium, the original "Madhouse on Madison," which had
existed from 1929 to 1994 - just down the block at 1800 W. Madison Street.
Construction on the United Center was initiated
in April 1992 and ended with the ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 18, 1994. The arena has since taken over the nickname of
its predecessor. The United Center is the largest arena in physical size, but not in seating capacity, in the United States.
The UC's seating capacity is 23,500 for most concerts; 20,916 for basketball with standing room of at least 23,129; and 19,717
for hockey with standing room of at least 22,428.
The United Center is named after its corporate sponsor, United Airlines.
The plan to build the arena was created by Blackhawks owner Bill Wirtz and Bulls owner Jerry Reindorf. The Bulls and the Blackhawks
operate the United Center Join Venture, a 50/50 partnership of the two teams. The United Center covers over 960,000 square
feet and is located on a 46-acre parcel, west of the Chicago Loop.
Noteworthy Events Hosted at the United Center
November 1, 1994, Michael Jordan's number 23 was retired by the Bulls. That same day, a 2,000-pound, 12-foot statue of Jordan
was unveiled. It is said to be the most celebrated feature of the United Center.
The United Center is also recognized
for hosting the Stanley Cup Finals twice in 2010 and 2013. The Blackhawks claimed the Stanley Cup both times. The Blackhawks
announced that hockey legends Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita would receive bronze statues in their honor outside of the United
Center during the 2011-12 NHL season. They now stand proudly alongside Michael Jordan's statue.
In 2011, Oprah The Farewell
Season: Oprah's Surprise Spectacular was taped at the United Center. The program aired on television On May 23 and May 24,
2011. Inside the arena, on the wall by gate 4, are pictures commemorating the two-day event.
The United Center was also
the venue where the 1996 Democratic Convention was held. That year, the Democratic Party nominated its presidential and vice-presidential
candidates, Bill Clinton and Al Gore - the incumbent holders of the respective offices.
Since opening in August 1994,
the United Center proudly can boast that it has hosted over 200 events each year. In addition to the events mentioned above,
the United Center has played host to great entertainment like the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen and the
E Street Band, U2 and The Who!
