Chris Stamey grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, alongside friend and collaborator Peter Holsapple. The two were inseparable and began playing music together when they were still very young. The two collaborated on the short-lived project Rittenhouse Square that released one LP. It wasn't until Stamey attended the University of North Carolina that he became serious about his music career. He met drummer Will Rigby to form the cult-classic pop combo Sneakers. When the group disbanded in the late 1970s, Stamey moved to New York to start his own record label, Car Records. It wasn't long after that Stamey joined the dB's with his old pal Holsapple. The band garnered a loyal fan base, and released several successful albums. In the early 2000s, Stamey released his first solo album, which brought him more fans and critical-acclaim.
