Born to a deacon and a church choir director in a small town on Long Island, Chrisette Michele Payne
(who would drop her last name as a professional) would be steeped in the gospel music tradition from a young age. She began
singing in gospel choirs at age four, and in high school she would lead her own gospel choir. She would develop her yearning,
scratchy-sweet vocals in the style of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and other jazz legends. After graduating from Five Towns
College with a degree in jazz and vocal performance, she began performing in local clubs. Her talent would get widespread
recognition when discovered by Def Jam scouts. She signed with the label in 2006, and produced her debut album I Am in 2007.
She would release two more albums with Def Jam, Epiphany (2009) and Let Freedom Reign (2010), the former being the only album
in which the majority of the content was not written by Michele herself.
After her 2010 album, Chrisette would experience
a period of personal and artistic burnout. She gained some weight and avoided public appearances. After taking some time off
to travel the world, she found a new and happier path for herself. She went vegan, moved to New York's trendy Williamsburg
district, and switched to the Motown label. In 2013 she came out with Better – an album that would express her commitment
to an optimistic outlook and fresh lifestyle.
Her latest creative projects include modelling for PETA and producing
a cookbook of her favourite recipes entitled "Fat Vegan."
Chrisette would find fame in Manhattan's
Village Underground club. It would be here that her astounding vocal capabilities would win over Grammy laureate India.Arie,
who invited Michele to be her opening act, and Def Jam scouts. She would be featured on tracks by Jay-Z and Nas before releasing
her critically acclaimed album I Am. Her debut album would bring Chrisette squarely into the spotlight. It generated four
singles, and the lead "If I Have My Way" would rise to number four on Billboard's Hot Adult R&B Airplay.
Chrisette and Will.i.am won a Grammy for Best Alternative/Urban Performance for "Be OK." This strong-willed song about getting
over a breakup showcases Chrisette's sultry charisma and the frisson of her falsetto.
I Am, Epiphany and Let Freedom
Reign would all make the top ten. Along with I Am, Chrisette's latest Better would be her second album to earn four out of
five stars from Allmusic. Better would also be nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best R&B Album. Notable singles
from her heart-melting discography include "Epiphany," based on a torrid relationship with former manager Douglas "Biggs"
Ellison (whom she would later sue for embezzlement and harassment), and the sleek, self-aware "Blame It On Me."
initially turned down some "green stuff" offered to her by producer Harold Lilly, claiming that she preferred white wine.
When he insisted, the verdant substance turned out to be juice. Upon hearing about how juicing had changed Lilly's life, Chrisette
decided to try it herself. As the doorway to Chrisette's new juicing and vegan diet, it was arguably one of the turning points
that would help establish her newfound well-being.
