R&B singer Chrisette Michele was born Chrisette Michele Payne in 1982 and started her singing career in church. At just
17 Michele picked up the work of Brazilian jazz singer Astrud Gilberto and knew that from there on she would work on her
own jazz structures. After performing locally for several years, India.Arie contracted Michele for her opening act and eventually
caught the attention of Def Jam Records. In 2006 she officially appeared with several Def Jam artists and the release of
her debut album, I Am, just a few months later.
