Born in Miami, Florida, Christopher Owens spent his formative years moving from one place to another. His parents were members of the Children of God traveling religious community so he and his family ended up living all over Asia before journeying throughout Western Europe. Christopher Owens learned to play guitar in his early teens and performed covers of Fleetwood Mac and the Everly Brothers' songs on the street. He left the church at the age of 16 and followed his sister to Texas. It was there where he met an eccentric Texas oil man, Stanley Marsh III. Owens spent four years as Marsh's personal assistant, then he moved onto San Francisco with the motivation of becoming a famous painter. He met Ariel Pink and Matt Fishbeck, and teamed up with them in their band Holy Shit. Christopher Owens formed his own band and was inspired to write his own songs in 2007.
With indie rock band Girls, Christopher Owens released two studio albums and an EP. Christopher Owens made the decision to leave the band in the summer of 2012 but announced he would continue to record music under his own name. His debut solo album, Lysandre, was recorded with a group of musicians in L.A. He explained that the album relays a story in track sequence of the debut Girls tour in 2008. It draws its title from a girl Christopher Owens met in France during that tour. He defines the album as "a coming of age story, a road trip story, a love story." With the help of seven musical artists featured on the album, Christopher Owens performed Lysandre in full for the first time ever at San Francisco's The Lodge at the Regency Center.
