Chromeo Background

The twosome making up Chromeo, David Macklovitch (also known as Dave 1) and Patrick Gemayel (also known as P-Thugg), met during the mid-1990s while attending high school in Montreal. David Macklovitch and Patrick Gemavel started to make music together at the age of 15. At the time, David Macklovitch's brother, known as A-Track, was breaking out as an up a coming DJ. A-Track later went on to become a member of the famous DJ duo, Duck Sauce. Duck Sauce has produced the following hits: "Barbara Streisand" and "Big Bad Wolf." Watching the success of Macklovitch's brother inspired both David and Patrick. It dawned on the two of them that success was successful. The initial band that the two created did not last long, but it led to David and Patrick working on hip hop sounds and eventually starting Chromeo.

Chromeo signed with Turbo Records and started releases great songs. The first album that Chromeo released was its debut, She's In Control. At the moment of its release, critics were fans of the duo's sound. Fans and critics suggested that Chromeo were akin to artists like Hall & Oates and Klymaxx and Sylvester.

Chromeo Breakthrough

The hit song "Needy Girl" became well-known and –liked across the globe, opening Chromeo up to an international audience. All it seemed to take was getting "Needy Girl" playing regularly in the clubs and Chromeo was in high demand in places like Europe and in North America. In 2006, Chromeo hit the road with the British rock group Block Party. After touring, Chromeo continue to release its electronic-funk music that has been in high demand. In addition to its own tunes, Chromeo started to collaborate with Daryl Hall to create a traditional funk jam session album called Live from Daryl's House. Chromeo released an album entitled White Women in May of 2014. It has garnered much attention from critics and fans across the globe. Over the years, Chromeo has released many successful singles like "Needy Girl," "I Am Somebody," "Bonafied Lovin'," "Jealous (I Ain't With It)," "Don't Turn the Lights On," "Hot Mess," and "When the Night Falls." In addition to the hit songs, Chromeo has had the opportunity to work with some brilliant artists other than Daryl Hall that include: Solange Knowles, Elly Jackson and DJ Mehdi. It isn't surprising that Chromeo has received awards for its critically recognized and fan-loved music. The duo has won MTV's Woodie Award and the CBC Radio 3 Bucky Award.

The Chromeo duo has worked hard to break out after having watched Dave 1's brother find success as a DJ. Chromeo has found its niche and the fans love the music and watching the duo perform in concert.

Chromeo Trivia

In an interview with GQ (United Kingdom), David Macklovitch discussed fashion by explaining his taste in suits, "The thing is that now boxy suits are in! So there's "good boxy" and there's "bad boxy". The trick with boxy is that you have to have boxy on top and really skinny at the bottom. The natural cycle of retro is crazy… a lot of stuff looks like bad Eighties Armani now, but you know, it's cool when it's recontextualised […]I think Saint Laurent still makes the best suit. I like structured shoulders. People have this idea that Italian suits are great but personally I could never wear an Italian suit because there's a nonchalance to Italian dressing that I could never pull off. I think you can only be from Italy and do it." Patrick Gemayel, on the other hand, discussed his interest in streetwear and his favorite brands like Pigalle, Hood by Air and KTZ. While Patrick shops these brands, he also promoted reusing clothing and an interest in shopping at vintage shops in Montreal.

The Chromeo Live Show Experience

Chromeo knows how to put on an amazing live show, having a role model in David's brother and collaborating with amazing artists who know the ropes. It also seems evident while seeing the duo in concert is that both members of Chromeo have a natural ability to entertain its audiences. What seems to be this natural ability to perform and entertain audiences is a deeper understanding that human beings, and specifically performers, are always learning. In the GQ article, David spoke to this idea through the analogy of fashion, "It's funny because all these articles talk to me about fashion like I know what I'm doing but I always say you learn as you go. It's only been three years that I [have] really know what I'm doing. Same with my brother A-Trak though: like in 2007 with the fluorescent hat and weird shaved sideburns every day! It's weird, there are people that were just always good - how did they do it? They're just born with it, I was definitely not born with it, definitely not. I mean if you see how my dad dresses you'd be like 'Yeah, OK, I see how far you've come.'" There is no better way to see how far Chromeo has come since its early days or its tour with Bloc Party than getting your tickets to see them now. Get your tickets on StubHub!
