it's not a question of if but when.
2013 was incredibly bright for CHVRCHES, the Scottish electropop band that took
the music world by storm with just a single online music video. They dominated the American music scene with their 2013 US
tour, and audiences everywhere came out in droves to see what everyone in the UK has been talking about. With songs that shimmy
and shimmer, CHVRCHES play captivating songs that make you want to get up and dance. They are currently on tour, and will
be making stops in San Francisco, San Diego, London, their hometown of Glasgow and even Singapore.
musical style has been called electronic and synthpop. But there's really no defining the unique sounds of this amazingly-talented
group. They take electronic elements and fuse them with catchy vocal melodies and emotive lyrics. The band has cited artists
like Prince, Tubeway Army, Depeche Mode, Kate Bush, Cyndi Lauper and Whitney Houston as their major influences. They use these
influential artists to create their one-of-a-kind sound, usually mixing and recording in a basement studio in Glasgow.
About the Artist
CHVRCHES is the three-piece band from Glasgow, Scotland that had the music industry banging
on its door after the band debuted its track "Lies" online. A thundering slice of electro-pop, the music juxtaposed abrasive
synths with delicate vocals from Lauren Mayberry—an incredibly gifted singer whose voice perfectly balances the intricate
and sometimes treacherous beats. That sole online post gave CHVRCHES away as a massive sleeping music giant just waiting to
be unleashed. But for a time the band remained silent to stoke the embers of intrigue. It worked, and now the wait is over.
The band is heading out on another tour and gaining more fans with every live performance.
The band was formed by seasoned
musicians Ian Cook, Martin Doherty and Lauren Mayberry in 2011. Cook and Doherty had previously worked together in the music
scene in Glasgow, but were ready to start something new. They asked Mayberry to sing on a couple of demos they were working
on. Their chemistry was obvious, and the three musicians decided to start a band. They spent several months writing and recording
in a basement studio in Glasgow, and released their first track "Lies" through a blog run by the Neon Gold label. It was an
instant hit. The new band, which they had named CHVRCHES with the Roman "v" in the middle, performed their first gig at The
Artschool Glasgow in July of 2012.
The fame of their first single began to grow throughout 2012, being ranked No. 28
on NME's Best Tracks of 2012. Their official debut single, "The Mother We Share," took the No. 51 spot on the Huffington Post's
Top 52 Songs of 2012. The band signed with the indie label Glassnote Records in early 2013. Shortly after signing, the band
premiered their second single "Recover" and their first EP, Recover. The rest of the year was spent performing at some of
the biggest shows in the country, including SXSW, and on shows like Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. They also toured with Depeche
Mode and released their debut album, The Bones of What You Believe. The album was a critical success, and put CHVRCHES on
the map. They are currently touring all over the globe, bringing their unique sound to the masses.
The typical path to success for a young band nowadays is to self-record, distribute everything freely online
all at once and hope you get noticed. CHVRCHES went the less self-promoting route, opting instead to create a little mystery
and intrigue. And boy did it work. Without images or interviews building up online, CHVRCHES gradually built up a strong following
thanks to only a handful of tracks released. And what followed was a deluge of praise and the lining up of record labels to
work with the hot young rock stars. In early 2013, the band signed with the indie label Glassnote Records and began recording
their first EP and their debut album. Since the release of their first official single, the band has seen monumental success
and is now touring the world, gaining more fans every day.
