A product of the diaspora that came upon the rock scene in the 90s, Clutch was the brainchild of performers
Dan Maines, Roger Smalls, Tim Sult, and Jean-Paul Gaster. The four musicians were all influenced by the local Maryland music
scene, meeting while still in high school and going through various band names and iterations, including Glut Trip, before
finally arriving at the moniker Clutch and slowly making inroads into the musical mainstream. The band would moved through
different labels throughout the 90s, starting with Earache Records before moving on to Columbia shortly before the end of
the decade. By the late 90s, Clutch was a household name on the metal scene, known for their unique sound that fell under
a litany of genre descriptions ranging from hard rock and alt metal to southern rock and hardcore punk.
By the early
00s the band had made the move to Atlantic Records, with Clutch cementing themselves as decade spanning rock mainstays with
the success of their debut Atlantic release. They would continue to climb rungs of the music scene, with notable collaborations
alongside the cast of Viva La Bam/CKY, with Bam Margera directing one of Clutch's music videos. Known for their fiery and
action filled live performances, the band released a string of hugely successful live albums, and by the end of the 00s were
heading their own music label, Weathermaker Music.
Despite numerous shakeups, the band has retained their signature
sound and adapted perfectly to the ever landscape of the modern music industry. They've also expanded their musical retinue
with various side projects, including the jam band The Bakerton Group, which is comprised of the members of Clutch but releases
separate, instrumental only music that demonstrates the band's in depth music making complexity. The members of Clutch have
become veritable rock stars, with various members working alongside some of the biggest musicians in the industry from Thomas
Andersson to the celebrated heavy rock band Mastodon. Now on ten albums and counting, Clutch is showing no signs of slowing
down as they continue to dominate the hard rock music scene worldwide.
The band's 1998 release
The Elephant Riders would prime the band for major decade spanning success, with the album hitting the #1 position on the
US Heatseekers Chart and appearing on the US Billboard 200. Released on Columbia Records, the album fell under the production
tutelage of Jack Douglas and spawned foundational pieces of the Clutch discography, including "The Elephant Riders", "The
Dragonfly", and "Ship of Gold".
2013 would be a testament to Clutch's longevity, with their tenth full length studio
album Earth Rocker dropping to huge critical and commercial success. The album received perfect or near perfect scores from
Sputnikmusic, Powerline, and About.com, and peaked at the #15 and #3 positions on the Billboard 200 and US Indie charts, respectively.
The album was carried by such addictive tracks as "Oh, Isabella" and "Crucial Velocity".
Neil Fallon has had a tough road to success, with a battle against major spinal cord issues in 2013. Neil would undergo surgery
in late 2013, and was back on the road shortly afterward at full strength.
