Clutch was formed when bassist Dan Maines, drummer Jean Paul Gaster, guitarist Tim Sult and vocalist Roger Smalls got together to perform several small gigs. After the band performed with the band Maelstrom, Smalls left the band and Neil Fallon joined the group. With the help of Fallon, the group began to gain some traction and attention in the music world with their new southern stoner rock vibe. They sang about subjects that would speak to any southern-born music fan including John Wilkes Booth, trucks, beer and horses. Some of their most popular songs hit on these subjects specifically. With the released of their first 12" release, the band began their rise to glory. It wasn't long before they were signing with EastWest Records and recording their first full-length album that gained mainstream exposure.
