Columbus Crew Major League Soccer

The Columbus Crew play in the MLS, or Major League Soccer, which is the premiere soccer league in the United States and Canada and is also a member of CONCACAF. Nineteen teams in the league compete during the regular season which begins each March hoping to earn a spot in the postseason. Each team plays thirty four regular season games with the regular season champion being awarded the Supporters' Shield. The top ten teams advance to the playoffs with the last two teams playing in the MLS Cup in December. The first season of the MLS was in 1996 with ten charter members of which the Columbus Crew was one. Plans for establishing the league began as far back as 1988 when U.S. Soccer made an agreement with FIFA to have plans to get a Division I professional soccer league in place in order to be allowed to host the 1994 World Cup. The league is granted a spot for three American teams in the CONCACAF Champions League while another team has the chance to qualify via the U.S. Open Cup. Year after year MLS gains more fans and it stands as one of the five major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada.

Columbus Crew Rivalries

One of the chief rivals of the Columbus Crew is the New York Red Bulls. Another Eastern Conference MLS team, the Red Bulls and the Crew brought their rivalry to a new level when they faced off against one another in the 2008 MLS Cup which the Crew won 3 to 1. Since then the Red Bulls have been constantly looking to exact revenge while the Crew have been looking to maintain dominance over the New York club. Another rivalry exists with Sporting Kansas City, formerly the Kansas City Wizards, who the Columbus Crew beat in a tie breaker to win the 2004 MLS Supporters' Shield. Hard feelings still remain between the two sides even as players and coaches have changed and when the two sides face off against one another on the pitch you can be sure that the intensity of the competition will be high.

The Experience

There are few events as exciting as seeing one top notch soccer team compete at home against another. The players in the MLS have grown up playing the sport that they love and are out there s much to advance the popularity of the sport in the United States.
