Chaka Khan was born Yvette Marie Stevens on March 23, 1953 in Great Lakes, Illinois and took the African name Chaka Khan while working with the Black Panthers during High School. After quitting high school in 1969, Kahn joined a group called Rufus and released a self-titled debut album in 1973 which made them one of the best funk groups of the 1970's.
