Commodore Ballroom

Commodore Ballroom History

Since 1929, the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, British Columbia, has hosted its share of milestone events, from graduations to musical luminaries.

George Conrad Reifel built the original Commodore Cabaret at the request of his wife, Alma, who believed community members needed somewhere else to go for entertainment besides the overcrowded Hotel Vancouver ballroom. The location picked out was the Granville Street site of the Commodore Cafe. Since 1924, the cafe had served as the home to a small restaurant.

The Commodore was modeled after a ballroom design in Britain and was designed by H.H. Gillingham, a Vancouver-area architect. Unfortunately, Gillingham passed away just after the plans came to fruition for the Commodore, so his son Bruce, stepped in to complete the project.

The venue was - and remains to this day - a remarkable example of the art deco style trendy at the time.

From the design to the need for the venue in the community, conditions for this type of venue seemed ripe. But as timing would have it, it's opening on December 3, 1929, came in the shadows of the stock market collapse. Sadly, the venue closed after only four months. But the Dirty Thirties didn't discourage managing directors Nick Kogas and Johnny Dillias. The room was reopened in late 1930. Their recipe for success was to serve up dinner and dancing Saturday nights with a cover of $1 per person. For the remainder of the week, they rented the room out for special events, company parties, private social events and more!

It wasn't long after that the Commodore became the hot spot for Vancouver's elite. Having the standing for the best dance floor in town, all of Vancouver's large events were hosted at the Commodore.

For more than three decades, the Commodore depended on a very inventive blend of house bands, talented acts and room rentals to maintain its first-class reputation in Vancouver.

In 1996, the Commodore closed its doors, and for three years, the club sat empty. But in 1999, the Commodore not only reopened with a renovated new look but also opened with a new focus on live music. The Commodore rekindled the live-music scene and hasn't looked back.

Commodore Ballroom Trivia

Did you know that the Commodore Ballroom was not just known for its stellar entertainment? That's right it was also recognized for its sprung dance floor, comprised of horsehair lining. The horsehair lining served to absorb some of the impact of dancing feet. The floor was a rarity at the time it was installed with only a few venues on the planet having a similar floor.

To experience the rich history of the Commodore Ballroom, you need to plan a trip there yourself. If the walls of the Commodore could talk, it would certainly have a number of interesting stories to share!
