Common Background

Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr., best known by his stage name Common, was born and raised in Chicago. During his high school years, Common started to develop a strong interest in hip hop and rapping, and he and a few of his friends decided to form a rap trio. Although the trio may have started for fun in high school, it soon led to Common's success. The rap group opened for acts like Big Daddy Kane and N.W.A, and it gave Common a small taste of success. After high school, Common attended Florida A&M University on a scholarship, but left after two years because his rap career started to take off. In 1992, he debuted his first single, "Take It EZ" under the name Common Sense, and he soon became one of the most talked about artists in the underground rap scene.

In 1994, Common released the album, Resurrection, which met with a great deal of critical acclaim and started to expand Common's fan base beyond Chicago. For the next several years, Common continued to churn out incredible hip hop anthems, and by 1999, he had secured a major label record deal with MCA Records. One year later, Common released one of his most critically acclaimed albums to date, Like Water for Chocolate, and it became his major commercial breakthrough. From that moment on, it was as if Common couldn't be stopped. He consistently released wildly successful and highly acclaimed albums, and he had become one of the biggest names in hip hop. To this day, Common is a major star in the music world, and you can see him both on TV and on stages across the world, putting on awesome hip hop shows for his fans.
