Initial discussion about the Compton Family Ice Arena stemmed out of the need to accommodate the growing
fan base of Notre Dame's Fighting Irish hockey team and accommodate the need for a community ice arena.
Plans for the
5,022-seat Compton Family Ice Arena on the Notre Dame campus in Indiana were initially announced in 2009. The plans came to
fruition when the Compton Family Ice Arena opened in October 2011, serving as the home to two ice rinks to support the University
of Notre Dame men's ice hockey, intramural hockey and broomball, women's club hockey as well as youth, high school and adult
ice hockey, figure skating and public skating. Kevin and Gayla Compton, owners of the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey
League (NHL), fronted much of the generous donations for the Compton Family Ice Arena.

Since 2011, droves of fans head to the Compton Family
Ice Arena to catch the University of Notre Dame men's hockey team go blade-to-blade with some of the nation's top rivals.
Compton Family Ice Arena also includes the Charles W. "Lefty" Smith Jr. Rink, the NHL-size playing surface of the main arena.
This rink pays tribute to the first coach in the Notre Dame hockey program. The Olympic-size rink can be split into two smaller
rinks to be utilized by the USA Hockey Athlete Development Model (ADM), figure skating, public skating, Irish Youth Hockey
League (IYHL) and intramural broomball.
In addition to community events, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will get a jumpstart
on the 2014-15 hockey season as they heat up the ice to play host to the 2014 Ice Breaker Tournament at the Compton Family
Ice Arena in October 2014. The teams scheduled to participate in the 2014 event are: Minnesota, Minnesota Duluth, RPI and
of course, the Fighting Irish.

Located north of South Bend, Indiana, Notre
Dame is a census-designated place, comprised of three college campuses: Saint Mary's College, the University of Notre Dame
and Holy Cross College. Additionally, three principal headquarters of Holy Cross religious communities are stationed in Notre

Holy Cross College campus houses the Provincial Offices of the Indiana Province of Priests and Brothers and the Midwest Province

police forces of the colleges and the U.S. post office are their government entities. The University of Notre Dame has its
own fire department along with its own power and water utilities.

designed to accommodate over 5,000 fans. The seating capacity includes both seated and standing room with most of the seats
a comfy, chair-back style. The hockey band and student section bleacher seating are situated on the west end of both levels.
The elite club for Fighting Irish Hockey games, O'Brien's, is on the upper level along with the media center and general admission
seating. Locker rooms, training facilities and numerous offices are also housed in this building.
