Con Funk Shun started as a band put together by two high school students in Vallejo, California. Drummer Louis A. McCall Sr. and singer/guitarist Michael Cooper started the band and later added bassist Cedric Martin, keyboardist Danny "Sweet Man" Thomas, trumpeter Karl Fuller and woodwinds player Paul "Maceo" Harrell. They rounded out the group with well-known instrumentalist Felton Pilate. Their first gig was playing backup for the Soul Children under the name Project Soul. Their work with the Soul Children earned them a chance to work with Stax Records, who gave the band its name and produced their first album. The album was a success and they soon signed with Mercury Records. They released eleven albums in ten years, with several of the albums achieving certified gold and topping the US Billboard charts.
