Counting Crows Background

The Counting Crows first took shape in the 1990s in Berkeley, California. Counting Crows attributes its inspiration to band influences like Van Morrison, R.E.M., Nirvana, Bob Dylan and The Band. In early 1993, Counting Crows cut its first album, August and Everything After. Featuring mainly angst-ridden songs, August and Everything After only featured one upbeat tune, "Mr. Jones," which catapulted the group to stardom. What contributed to the group's authenticity was the Counting Crows' ability to balance frontman Adam Duritz's agonizing lyrics with the signature sound representative of the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1996, Counting Crows issued Recovering the Satellites, which featured the Top 10 hit "A Long December." The tune cracked both the Modern Rock and Adult Top 40 charts. Across a Wire: Live in New York followed in 1998. And, This Desert Life dropped in 1999. Then came Films About Ghosts followed by the group's eponymous album, which yielded the hit "Accidentally in Love." The tune was featured on the soundtrack of the hit flick Shrek 2. In 2006, New Amsterdam: Live at Heineken Music Hall became available to the public. Two years later Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings arrived. In 2009, the band severed their relationship with Geffen Records but remained in the spotlight with consistent tours. Two years later, the band released August and Everything After: Live at Town Hall, another live album. And, in 2012 they came out with Underwater Sunshine (Or What We Did on Our Summer Vacation), which included numerous cover songs. Echoes of the Outlaw Roadshow, their fourth official live album, dropped in 2013. And, Somewhere Under Wonderland is scheduled to be released in the fall of 2014.

Counting Crows Trivia

Counting Crows took its namesake from a divination rhyme about the crow from the film Signs of Life: "Well I dreamt I saw you walking up a hillside in the snow/Casting shadows on the winter sky as you stood there, counting crows/One for sorrow two for joy/Three for girls and four for boys/Five for silver, six for gold/Seven for a secret never to be told."
