Cut Copy Background
In Melbourne, Australia,
Dan Whitford decided to start a solo project to showcase his DJing skills. In 2001, Whitford submitted a demo-tape to Modular
Recordings, who liked his unique indie lo-fi dance music so much that they signed him right away. Soon, guitarist Harry Howard
and bassist Bennett Foddy joined Whitford to round out the lineup of Cut Copy.
In 2004, the band released their debut
LP, Bright Like Neon Love, which contained a few hit singles like "Saturdays" and "Future". The band started to tour around
the world to promote their music and garner an international fan base, supporting huge musical acts like Franz Ferdinand,
The Presets, Bloc Marty, Mylo, and more. The more they toured, the more fans fell in love with their unique dance music. Cut
Copy's popularity started to gain an international foothold, and in 2007, the band went on tour with Daft Punk on the Neververland
tour, performing in front of sold out crowds all over Australia.
Touring with Daft Punk gave Cut Copy an enormous platform
on which to showcase their talents, and it ended up placing them on the forefront of the indie dance music scene. They have
achieved great success in their home country, Australia, and have also had much success around the world. Out of the four
studio albums they have released over the course of their career, they have landed a number one album spot in Australia for
In Ghost Colours (2008) and have also made their way onto international charts, such as those of the UK, Ireland, US, Canada,
Sweden, and more.
After a few lineup changes throughout the years, the current members of Cut Copy are Whitford, Tim
Hoey, Ben Browning, and Mitchell Scott. As Cut Copy continues to produce awesome dance beats and perform around the world,
you should make sure you don't miss them when they come to perform at a venue near you. Head to StubHub right away to grab
your tickets before they are all gone!
In addition to nabbing a number one spot on Australian
music charts with In Ghost Colours, Cut Copy has also produced several hit tracks. Some of their most popular singles include
"Hearts on Fire", "Lights and Music", "Going Nowhere", and "Future". Their vintage synth pop sound continues to attract more
and more fans, so make sure you are in the audience when Cut Copy performs in a city near you!
Whitford was trying to find a name for the band, he was scrolling down the edit menu on his computer. He saw the option "Cut/Copy",
and the combination of the two words jumped out at him. He admits that "at the time it felt like a fairly abstract choice,"
but now feels like the name really resonates with the band's sound and vibe.
