Perez his spent his career performing alone, with ensembles and leading groups of other musicians. He has earned three Grammy nominations for his exuberant and original recordings. His album Motherland was nominated for two Grammys for "Best Latin Jazz Album." He also received an award for "Best Jazz Album" from the renowned Boston Music Awards. The same album was mentioned as one of the best albums of the year by the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune and Billboard magazine. He's also held the title as for "Pianist of the Year," by the Jazz Journalists Association. Born in 1965 in Panama, Perez began his music career at an early age. He was just three-year-old when his father began giving him piano lessons. By 10 he was studying at the National Conservatory in Panama. He came to the US to enroll at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, but later changed his major and schools to pursue his music career. While he was completing his education at Berklee College of Music, he started playing with big name musicians like Jon Hendricks, Terence Blanchard and Claudio Roditi. Perez gained national attention when he became the youngest member of Dizzy Gillespie's United Nations Orchestra.
