About Danny Brown
Born Daniel Dewan Sewell, Danny Brown grew up in the suburbs of Detroit.
His Filipino father was a DJ and would introduce Danny to his future influences at a young age, including Roy Ayers, LL Cool
J, and A Tribe Called Quest. Danny found a special place in his heart for music from a young age, first professing to want
to be a rap artist in kindergarten. Despite his parent's efforts to keep Danny in a safe and sheltered environment growing
up, he would eventually have to deal with the realities of growing up on the tough streets of Detroit. Like many of his friends,
Danny would deal drugs during his late teens and early teens until getting caught and arrested, eventually serving eight months
in jail. Danny since has disassociated himself with dealing. However, the experiences and lifestyle of living and dealing
on the streets of Detroit heavily influence the messages and content of his lyrics.
Brown first began his hip hop career
in a group called Rese'vor Dogs, with fellow Detroit rappers Chips and Dopehead. The group would make limited success that
would eventually get Danny noticed by Roc-A-Fella records and move to New York. Roc-A-Fella was not a good fit and Danny would
soon return to Detroit.
By 2010, Danny was recording with G-Unit rapper Tony Yayo, releasing Hawaiian Snow. Amid speculation
that Danny would sign with the label, Brown came out saying he wasn't signed because of his fashion choices. Brown would say
in an interview that 50 Cent "Liked the music, but he didn't like the way I looked". Brown was known for sporting vintage
rock wardrobes at the time, which didn't fit with the G-Unit aesthetic.
Brown would record various other mixtapes, eventually
moving to the Washington DC label Rappers I Know. He would release The Hybrid in 2010, but mainstream success would still
elude him. Brown would go on to say that The Hybrid was where he went through the most growth as an artist, and "where [he]
found [his] voice". This album would be the beginning of Danny's signature high vocals, mixing traditional hip hop with his
own unique style.
Danny Brown would receive universal acclaim and commercial success with
the release of XXX in 2011, while freshly signed to Fool's Gold Records. XXX would receive numerous accolades including being
named best hip hop album of the year by Spin Magazine and 19th best album of the year by Pitchfork. His hit "Blunt After Blunt"
would carry the album, with artist ASAP Rocky directing the music video. Rocketing to fame, Brown would tour the country with
Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) throughout 2012 and eventually sign onto a partnership deal with Adidas. Amongst all his
fame, Brown would also be on the front cover of both XXL (as one of the top 10 Freshmen hip hop artists of the year) and FADER
(alongside Kendrick Lamar).
Danny spent most of 2012 working on his next album, Old. Before its release he said this
album would be a departure from XXX, with less humor and more serious delivery of his material. His single "Grown Up" off
of Old would be rated the 41st best song of 2012 by Rolling Stone magazine, cementing Brown's presence in the hip hop scene.
Brown would have a somewhat strange conversation on the show of TV host Kathy Griffin. After finding a
YouTube video where Danny Brown states he would sleep with Griffin, she invited him to his show on Valentine's Day. The two
would discuss the possibility of having children, and play a game called "Suck breast, kiss stomach".
busted for the second time for possession, violating his parole, Danny Brown would flee from law enforcement for five years
before being caught. Upon being caught he would spend 8 months in jail, after which he vowed to leave the life of dealing
