About Danny Elfman
A native of Los Angeles, Danny grew up in the Baldwin Hills neighborhood
where he developed a love of cinema from a young age. His hobbies would expand to include music, joining the school band and
starting a string of low profile band mostly in the ska genre. As his music matured he would find himself unfulfilled by his
studies, spending the later years of his youth in Europe and Africa as a traveling musician. He would bounce between France,
Ghana, and Mali, surrounding himself in local musical influences and integrating them into his distinctive musical style.
would eventually return to Los Angeles, and begin spending time at the California Institute of the Arts, focusing his studies
on world music and bringing his considerable knowledge of local sounds to his instructors and fellow students. He would expand
his musical retinue by forming his first mainstream band, The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, which would later shorten
its name to Oingo Boingo and become one of the most fundamental members of the new wave movement of the 70s. They would frequently
tour all across North America, changing the landscape of the music scene for nearly two decades deciding to call it quits
in 1995. Oingo Boingo remains one of the most influential bands of the 70s and 80s, with their musical influences reverberating
through the years and into today.
Elfman would become involved in writing his first film score in the mid 1980s, after
forming a friendship with visionary director Tim Burton and getting offered the spot of composing on the classic hit Pee-wee's
Big Adventure. Alongside fellow Oingo Boinger Steve Bartek, the duo would floor Tim Burton with their musical work, and Elfman
would go on to form a long working partnership with Burton that is still alive today. He would work extensively on Corpse
Bride as well as the mega hit Nightmare Before Christmas. Aside from his work on the musical score, he would be the singing
voice of Jack Skellington, score two other minor parts in the film, and voice Bonejangles in Corpse Bride.
branched out even further into other musical mediums, including composing a show for Cirque de Soleil, a composition written
for the American Composers Orchestra titled "Serenada Schizophrana", work for the world famous Hollywood Bowl Orchestra titled
"The Overager Overture". His recent work in film, aside from his work with Tim Burton, includes work on a Houdini biopic as
well as James Franco's 2013 film adventure Oz the Great and powerful.
Elfman's list of hits
extends decades, with countless accolades accompanying almost ever major release. Amongst his work include the soundtracks
for movies such as: Tim Burton's 1987 cult classic film Beetlejuice; Randal Kleiser's Big Top Pee-wee; 1989's Grammy award
winning Batman, again directed by Tim Burton; Edward Scissorhands; Sam Raimi's Army of Darkness; The 1996 Mission Impossible
remake, starring Tom Cruise; Will Smith's iconic film Men in Black; Good Will Hunting; The 2001 remake of Planet of the Apes;
Again with Sam Raimi in 2002's Spider-Man, starring Toby McGuire; and the 2013 breakout hit American Hustle.
of the reasons Elfman quit performing with Oingo Boingo is due to his hearing. He claims he has a genetic disposition towards
hearing loss, and countless years on the stage has only accelerated the loss of his hearing.
