About The Band
Technically forming all
the way back in 1994 when Benny McCarthy, Donal Clancy, and Doncchadh met up at the Oireachtas Festival in Dungarvan, Co.Waterford,
from there the group would grow to include a wide variety of artists that specialized in everything from the bodhran, button
accordion, bouzouki, and of course the more well known instruments like the fiddle, flute, and guitar. Their first event as
a group was at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient in 1995, with their performance being a massive success and promptly
were asked back for the following year. The next year they won the La Boulee Des Korrigan award for best new band of the festival,
and quickly began working on what would be their debut album, 1997's aptly named "Danu". From there the group continued on
with their incredible tours and live performances, all while working on their sophomore effort. The result was 2000's "Think
Before You Think" and was a major success, winning awards and making the Danu name known all over. It was with the release
of this album that the group showed off their three newest members, all of which perfectly complemented the already stellar
lineup that Danu was composed of. From there the group continued on with their incredible releases such as "All Things Considered",
"The Road Less Travelled", "Up In The Air", "When All Is Said and Done", and most recently "Seanchas" in 2010.
While Danu was off to a great start, there was one album in particular that really made them renowned throughout
the world for their amazing traditional Irish music. Their self-titled debut was a solid entry into what would be an extensive
and consistently great discography, it was with their sophomore effort "Think Before You Think" that they began to get the
attention that the deserved. Winning praise and accolades such as Best Overall Traditional Act by magazine "Irish Music",
the album made cemented their place in the world as a band worth watching.
The name Danu is
an interesting choice, and one that is lost upon many listeners in the US or many other countries outside Ireland. Danu is
a Celtic goddess that is seen as many ways such as the mother of gods or as an ancestral figure of sorts, but it is an endearing
name that was suggested by a close friend of the band. The name has served them well and carries a sort of mystery along with
them, with those who don't know the origin of the name wondering what it means, and people aware of it wondering it's association.
Chances are good that you've heard traditional Irish music before, be it recorded or live, but
until you've seen what Danu is capable of when they take to the stage then you haven't had the full Irish music experience.
Touting performances like none other, the members of Danu show off their energy and stage presence with each and every show
as they play their hearts out to the fans and newcomers that find their way to their shows. There's something about seeing
each of the many members of Danu play their particular instruments with such ease, but also with an intense passion that showcases
their love of the craft that they share with the world as often as possible. Putting on a show you won't soon forget is part
of what makes Danu so amazing, so do yourself a favor and grab your tickets from StubHub so that you and yours will be able
to personally get a taste of what real Irish music sounds like. Tickets are now on sale, but that is likely to change in the
