Dar Williams expressed interest in music at an early age, penning her first tune at the tender
age of 11. By the time Williams attended high school, she developed a passion for sports, but it was an injury that prompted
her to try out for Godspell the musical. Eventually, she became a "drama queen." She continued to develop music compositions
and plays and described herself as a playwright. During her second year at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, Williams put
in some time at the Starry Plough in Berkeley, California. Upon graduating from college, completing a double-major in religion
and theater, she migrated to Boston in 1990 in search of a theater career. In Boston, she experimented with various facets
of theater from directing productions to performing. Eventually, she wound up at the Opera Company in her new hometown and
took up voice lessons under the tutelage of Jeannie Diva. It was Diva who urged her to try her hand at peddling her music
at cafes and coffeehouses in the area. Williams cut All My Heroes are Dead and I Have No History, two tapes, but they didn't
make any waves on the music scene. In 1993, she pulled up stakes again and settled in Northampton, Massachusetts, drawn to
the more laid-back atmosphere. Her luck changed in 1993 when The Honesty Room arrived. It was reissued in 1995 with the addition
of a pair of tracks by the Razor and Tie label. Williams has come out with several albums since then and continues to shine
as a folk-pop hero.
