Daughter is comprised of Elena Tonra and Igor Haefeli, along with drummer Remi Aguilella. Their first demo sparked a word-of-mouth campaign, which led to Daughter's self-released premiere EP, His Young Heart in 2011. Later that same year, they released an additional EP, The Wild Youth, which garnered acclaimed reviews from For Folk's Sake, a British website. Daughter also drew the attention from BBC Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens, who invited them to perform for a Maida Vale Session. Soon after headlining a 700-capacity show at the Assembly Hall in North London, Daughter inked a deal with renowned UK label 4AD. Their first single, Smother, was released in October 2012, which earned Single of the Week recognition by Huw Stephens.
Since the group's inception, Daughter has cultivated positive attention from fans and media alike. Several of their songs have even made their way to TV advertisements and televisions series. Youth was played in an ad promoting the Tour De France on UKTV; and in an ad to promote Fight Club: A History of Violence on the historical channel, UKTV; Popular U.S. show The Vampire Diaries featured the song Medicine; and Home was included on Grey's Anatomy.
