David Allan Coe Background

David Allan Coe was born in Akron, Ohio, and he discovered his rule-breaking attitude at an early age. When he was just nine years old, Coe was sent to a reform school, and spent the next couple of decades in and out of various correctional facilities. Coe even served three years at the Ohio State Penitentiary, and it was in prison that he was first encouraged to take up music as a hobby. Screamin' Jay Hawkins, whom Coe had met in prison, encouraged him to start writing songs, and once Coe began putting his pen to the paper, he discovered one of his most phenomenal talents – songwriting.

Once out of prison, David Allan Coe decided to move to Nashville, where he caught the eyes of executives from Plantation Records. With a recording contract under his belt, David Allan Coe went to work on writing and recording his own music, and released his debut album Penitentiary Blues in 1968. While it took him a while to achieve some mainstream success, Coe continued to create and release great country tunes, and he even released a couple of underground albums, which have become cult classics amongst his devoted fan base.

In the 1980s, Coe got a taste of some more mainstream success with charting hits like "The Ride" and "Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile", but he never became one of the leading country music artists. Instead, he maintained his devout cult following all throughout his career, which has been lengthy and prolific. Whether you first discovered Coe's music back in the '70s or have recently started to listen to some of his fantastic country tunes, there's no doubt that this country rebel is one artist you should see live in concert.
