David Cook Background
David Cook's love affair with music started early on. He took up the violin
first to impress a girl that he took notice of in the school's orchestra. Then, he received a Fender Stratocaster from his
dad when he was in seventh grade. Throughout his childhood, Cook was raised on a hearty variety of music. "My parents had
eclectic record collections. My mom liked Kenny Rogers and my dad was more into Boston, Kansas and Dire Straits. The first
cassette tape I ever bought was by Kris Kross. I was into Boyz II Men for a while. When I was 13, someone played me the song,
'Closer,' by Nine Inch Nails and once I got past the audacity of the lyrics, I really enjoyed the song. So I backtracked through
rock, which got me where I am now," Cook said.
In high school, Cook founded a band along with a friend and took parts
in more than a few musicals. After graduation, Cook went off to Central Missouri State but his studies didn't stop him from
focusing on his band, which became known as Axium. Cook came to a creative crossroads after finishing up college. He had the
choice between becoming a graphic designer or a full-time musician. The decision for Cook was easy. He of course followed
his passion for music to Tulsa. With some financial help from his pals, Cook was able to eventually cut the album, Analog
Heart. Regionally, the album was critically acclaimed and even garnered an URBY award, presented by the Urban Tulsa Weekly
for Best Independent Album. Cook was in the midst of developing his sophomore album when his brother, Andrew, approached him
with a special request. He had asked Cook to lend moral support while Andrew tried out for American Idol. At first, Cook needed
a little nudging. He said, "At the last minute, I decided to do it. Andrew and I were in the same group of four for the first
audition and he didn't make the cut. It was very awkward. I turned to him and said, 'Is this something you want me to do?
Because if you don't, I won't.' And his response was, 'If you don't, I'll beat your ass.' So it's entirely his and my mother's
fault that this happened to me, and I'm very grateful." And, before he knew it, Cook was whisked off to Hollywood, where he
eventually reigned over the seventh season of American Idol.
David Cook Albums
