David Grisman was born in New Jersey and learned to play the piano, saxophone and mandolin all by the time he was a teenager. Grisman joined the band the Even Dozen Jug Band in 1963 while he was taking classes at New York University and got the attention of other bluegrass artists. Grisman went on to play with bands like the Kentuckians and The Grateful Dead. Grisman's career was strong throughout the '60s and '70s and is still strong to this day.
