Grisman's upbringing doesn't call to mind images of a country singer in the making. Growing up in a conservative Jewish home in Hackensack, NJ, bluegrass music was furthest from his mind. But with jazz music close to the singer's heart, bluegrass soon began to make sense. He became a member of his first bluegrass band-the Even Dozen Jug Band-in 1963. But his unique blend of acoustic bluegrass, folk and jazz made his sound difficult to define. He affectionately called his strange style "dawg music" and the name stuck. After playing with two different bands and recording two albums in the early days of his career, the singer moved to San Fransisco and found a friend in famed rocker Jerry Garcia. Garcia took the singer under his wing, and invited him to play on his American Beauty tour with the Grateful Dead. After the tour Grisman began working on his solo career and released several chart-topping albums in the 80s and early 90s. His "dawg" idiom followed, and was part of the title of some of his musical collections. He continues to play with varying artists and dabble in every genre of music.
