DC United Major League Soccer

DC United play in the MLS, or Major League Soccer, which is the premiere soccer league in the United States and Canada and is also a member of CONCACAF. Nineteen teams in the league compete during the regular season which begins each March hoping to earn a spot in the postseason. Each team plays thirty four regular season games with the regular season champion being awarded the Supporters' Shield. The top ten teams advance to the playoffs with the last two teams playing in the MLS Cup in December. The first season of the MLS was in 1996 with ten charter members of which the Columbus Crew was one. Plans for establishing the league began as far back as 1988 when U.S. Soccer made an agreement with FIFA to have plans to get a Division I professional soccer league in place in order to be allowed to host the 1994 World Cup. The league is granted a spot for three American teams in the CONCACAF Champions League while another team has the chance to qualify via the U.S. Open Cup. Year after year MLS gains more fans and it stands as one of the five major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada.

DC United Rivalries

The main rival of DC United is the New York Red Bulls against whom they annually compete for the Atlantic Cup. Another rival DC United is the Philadelphia Union due to the close proximity of Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. United also has a rivalry with the United Soccer Leagues' Charleston Battery and the two teams go to battle each year for the Coffee Pot Cup. There is no place like RFK Stadium once DC United gets rolling, but that's something that you need to see for yourself. Be in the stands with the enthusiastic DC fans as the United look to pile up the wins in another memorable season of action.

The Experience

There are few events as exciting as seeing one top notch soccer team compete at home against another. The players in the MLS have grown up playing the sport that they love and are out there s much to advance the popularity of the sport in the United States. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world and gives birth to the most fervent and dedicated fans. One step into a stadium when the local national team is playing and you will understand what all of the fuss is about. Unrelenting action, otherworldly footwork, stunning slide tackles, and mind blowing, acrobatic saves by goalkeepers will have you seeing exactly why soccer is referred to as "the beautiful game." You will be chanting and singing along and barely even need to use your seat as move after move will have you jumping up and cheering for the home team. By the time the referee blows the final whistle you will be anxiously awaiting the next opportunity to attend a DC United game and will find yourself an MLS and soccer fan for life.
