Delta Rae Background
The story of Delta Rae begins in the Holljes household, where siblings Ian,
Eric and Brittany, were inspired by the record collection of their parents - which was brimming with Cat Stevens, Paul Simon,
Fleetwood Mac and James Taylor.
Growing up, Ian and Eric were drawn closer together by their passion for music. They
began penning songs together from a young age. Meanwhile, their younger sis, Brittany, carried around "this huge, brassy voice,"
as Ian describes it. "When she was young, it was like a lion that you couldn't quite tame. But as she got older and we got
to know her voice, we saw the power in it."
After Ian and Eric graduated from Duke University, they put some serious
thought into pursuing music as a career. They persuaded Brittany, a graduate of the University of California - Berkeley, to
join them on their quest and also enlisted their pal, Elizabeth Hopkins.
The four of them holed up in an old house in
the woods with the mission to find the soul of their group. They crafted songs and played them live. "Very early on I felt
we had found something special. It was really the uniting of the four voices, a type of music that resonated with me. Just
to be in the thick of it is amazing because the four people in this band sing with such heart - you just lose yourself in
it," Ian said.
By 2010, the group had expanded to include six. They added Grant Emerson (bassist) and Mike McKee (drummer)
to the band's lineup. Together, they worked on polishing their material with many of their songs evolving on a live stage.
For example, McKee improvised by using trash can lids and chains.
The band found that the biggest challenge was getting
their messages out and their voices heard. "Playing those early shows, you're often confronted by half-working sound systems
and weird venues and so you have to find an energy that can at times transcend the music. So a lot of times we'd come down
off stage and sing something in the middle of the audience, or be screaming out as opposed to singing in order to convey the
emotion, to find something primal that will affect people," Ian said.
It didn't take long for the band to solidify their
reputation as phenomenal live performers. The band members felt that if they could take their lumps in front of a live audience
that by the time they would step into the recording studio, their songs would be stalwart and solid.
Carry the Fire
proved to showcase that strength as well as passion. Carry the Fire manifests gospel, bluegrass, blues and pop, Americana
and gospel. But there is also the presence of traditions of folklore and storytelling.
