About Denis Matsuev

Pianist Denis Matsuev was born in the Siberian city of Irkutsk. Both of his parents were musicians, so it was only natural that he too would enter the world of music as well. When he was only three years old, Denis began to show his talent when he tried to reproduce melodies on the piano. Denis thus began studying music, and was awarded a prize at the New Names Charitable Foundation that allowed him to study in Moscow. While in Moscow, Denis was able to hone his extraordinary talents and he embarked on a tour with other young gifted musicians who were studying in his program. He continued studying music in Moscow, and eventually became a soloist with the Moscow State Philharmonic. Known for his passionate and virtuous performances, Denis made a name for himself and started to cultivate his signature style.

In addition to playing with various symphonies, Denis Matsuev also regularly performs at international music festivals, including the Shanghai International Arts Festival, Russian Winter Festival, Chopin Festival in Poland, the BBC Proms and Andrew Lloyd Webber Festival in London, Edinburgh International Festival, Klavier-Festival Ruhr in Germany, and many more. He has appeared in hundreds of recitals in worldwide concert halls, like Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Salle Gaveau, the Great Hall of the Conservatoire in Moscow, Hercules Hall in Munich, the Finnish National Opera House, and plenty more.

Denis Matsuev also serves as artistic co-director of the international Annecy Classic Festival in France, and he is the organizer and artistic director of two international festivals in Russia, which both provide the opportunity for gifted soloists from around the world to perform with some of best Russian symphony orchestras and conductors around. Not forgetting his humble beginnings, Matsuev also heads the New Names Charitable Foundation, which helped take his own career to new heights decades ago, and he also continues to support music education for musically gifted children in rural areas of Russia.

Denis Matsuev's career took a turning point in 1998 after winning the 11th International Tchaikovsky Competition in the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory of Music. It was at that point when Denis had established himself as a classical pianist, at just 23 years of age.
