An army of axe-wielding zombie Vikings might - just might - be more metal than Dethklok, the fictional band at the heart of Adult Swim's Metalocalypse. The show has been a favorite of headbangers since first premiering on the Cartoon Network's late-night lineup, spoofing metal's most persistent clichés while simultaneously reveling in an appreciation for the genre.
Metalocalypse has garnered a cult following (as most shows on Adult Swim do) as a comedy show poking fun at the too-serious attitude of death metal. Dethklok, the most popular metal band in the shows world, features characters that look like your worst nightmare's version of a metal band. The band leader, Nathan Explosion, tends to rate everything in terms of how brutal or metal it is.
In 2007, the show's vocal talents worked on releasing Dethklok's debut album, entitled The Dethalbum. It was reportedly recorded in a submarine in the Mariana Trench to get just the right sound.
