Detroit Pistons Latest News

Detroit appears defenseless in most games. “Our defense is not giving us a chance to win games,” coach Stan Van Gundy said Sunday after a 110-105 loss to Brooklyn. “You’re going to give 53 percent (shooting), 110 points and 29 free throws we don’t have a chance.” The Pistons have now lost four straight and have given up at least 110 points in each of those games. They may get some relief Friday by hosting Indiana (93.7 points per game, third-worst in the NBA). -- Randy Renner

Detroit Pistons Schedule in 2014-15

The Detroit Pistons are ready to rev their engines this season as they look to defend their home court from some of the top teams that the NBA has to offer. The Pistons have a very talented group of players that underperformed last season, and new head coach Stan Van Gundy is in town to try to put all of the pieces together. Van Gundy has a great track record as a head coach, so Pistons fans are excited about the possibilities. With a frontcourt filled with good players, Van Gundy is going to have to try to find the right roles for everyone, which could be a challenge. This is a big season for point guard Brandon Jennings, who has always had immense potential to be a star but has been plagued by questionable decision-making. Van Gundy could be the guy to turn him into a stud. There are some great games set for 2014-15, so check them out.

The Pistons will have to bring their best to the court when they host the Chicago Bulls multiple times this season. The Bulls have star point guard Derrick Rose back in uniform this season, and Chicago looks like they could be a contender for the conference title in 2014-15. The Pistons are going to have to try to break through the tough defense that the Bulls play while dealing with the offensive versatility that Chicago enjoys on the other end of the court. Some victories against a team of this caliber could be just the confidence boost that the Pistons need to excel this season.

Detroit will have another tough divisional opponent visit this season in the Cleveland Cavaliers. LeBron James returned to Cleveland in the offseason, and he was joined by Kevin Love. Now the Cavs are quickly one of the best teams in the NBA, and the Pistons are going to have to host them on multiple occasions in 2014-15. Stopping James is nearly impossible, containing his running mates may be the best strategy for the Pistons this season. You can see all of the matchups coming to The Palace this season by looking at the full home schedule.

Detroit Pistons Team Info

The Detroit Pistons did not fare as they had hoped last season, and they are looking to bounce back in a big way in 2014-15. The team had a massive overhaul in the offseason, firing longtime general manager Joe Dumars and bringing in former Miami Heat and Orlando Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy to not only coach the team but run all basketball operations. Van Gundy is now the decision-maker for the franchise, and he has a successful track record of coaching and talent evaluation, so hopes run high for Pistons fans. With a solid core of players already in place, the Pistons brought in some nice role players in the offseason. Newcomer DJ Augustine should bring some scoring punch off the bench, and veteran Caron Butler should give the team some added toughness and leadership, something they probably need after last season. The Pistons have a rising star in center Andre Drummond, who reminds a lot of people of a young Dwight Howard, a player that Van Gundy coached in Orlando and built an offensive scheme around. The team will be looking for better seasons from both Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings, last offseason's big additions. The Pistons definitely have the talent to contend for a spot in the playoffs in the Eastern Conference, and perhaps with a seasoned coach that has been to an NBA Finals they'll get the most out of that talent.

Fan Experience

The atmosphere at an NBA game is something that simply cannot be duplicated from anywhere else, certainly not from the confines of your living room or the local sports bar. There is no substitute for being there in the stands when the Detroit Pistons take to the floor to do battle with a quality opponent. When you see a player grab a rebound and take the ball coast to coast for a huge dunk, you'll understand why seeing the game in person is the best way to enjoy pro hoops. Be there in person for as many Pistons games as possible this season, and this should be one of the more entertaining Pistons teams in recent memory.

Detroit Pistons Trivia

What All-Star center did current Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy help mold in Orlando?

The answer is Dwight Howard, who has been one of the top big men in the game for some time now. Pistons fans are hoping that Van Gundy can help turn young center Andre Drummond into the force that Howard has been, and there is good reason to think that this is possible. Drummond's physical capabilities mirror those of Howards, and these abilities don't exactly grow in trees. Drummond has already shown his immense potential in his short NBA career, and he appears to be just scratching the surface of his potential. Van Gundy could turn him into the superstar he looks destined to be.

The Detroit Pistons are a franchise that is a part of the National Basketball Association, the premier basketball league in the world. The Pistons were founded in 1947 as the Fort Wayne Pistons before moving to Detroit in 1957. Since then the Pistons have put together some incredible seasons for their loyal fans to enjoy. The Pistons famously won back to back NBA Championships in 1989 and 1990 with their "Bad Boys" lineup. The Pistons added another championship in 2004, upsetting a heavily-favored Los Angeles Lakers team in the NBA Finals. The Pistons are looking to add to their already rich history with a solid performance this season.
