Detroit Red Wings Playoff tickets

Detroit Red Wings History

The Detroit Red Wings joined the NHL as one of the Original Six in 1927 and are one of the most storied franchises in the league. They have won 11 Stanley Cup Championships which ranks them third in NHL history behind the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs. They have more Stanley Cup Championships than any other team based in the United States and have caused Detroit to be referred to as Hockey Town. They had a rough stretch from the mid-Sixties through the Eighties when they were one of the worst franchises in the league, a time period when they were referred to as the Dead Wings, but bounced back in a big way in the Nineties and now are one of the most successful teams in the NHL. Dating back to 1991 the Red Wings have made the playoffs 22 years in a row, a streak that is not only the current longest in the NHL, but also in all North American sports. The Red Wings are poised to continue that streak this year and could make a deep run in the 2014 playoffs.

About the Team

In what should be their 23rd straight trip to the NHL playoffs, the Red Wings will be looking to bring home their 12th Stanley Cup Championship. They currently sit in fifth place in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference, and while it does not appear likely they can catch the Boston Bruins who sit atop the division, it is very likely that the Red Wings can catch and pass the other teams ahead of them and earn an excellent seed in the playoffs. Left winger captain Henrik Zetterberg is pacing the offense, leading the team in goals and points, but he will need help from the likes of Pavel Datsyuk if the Red Wings are going to advance in the playoffs. The defense is also a force to be reckoned with thanks to the strong play in goal by Petr Mrazek and the leadership in the back of defenseman Niklas Kronwall.

The Experience

Hockey fans in general are some of the most passionate sports fans around, but nothing quite matches the fanaticism surrounding the NHL playoffs and fans of the Detroit Red Wings are some of the most dedicated and vociferous fans in the entire NHL. On game day at Joe Louis Arena the fans file in and take their seats and that is when the cheering and chanting begins. As the clock winds down closer and closer to the dropping of the puck the crowd works itself into a frenzy. Finally both teams are ready for face off and the excitement really begins. Thunderous, bone rattling hits, incredible displays of speed and agility, powerful slapshots, and tremendous saves set the arena on fire for the following three periods of world class college hockey. By the time the final buzzer sounds your voice is hoarse and your palms are stinging from clapping and giving high fives and you will already be planning a return trip. Everything is ratcheted up a notch during the NHL playoffs and the further teams advance the more intense the competition becomes. If you thought regular season NHL games were exciting, just wait until you experience an NHL playoff game live and in person.

NHL Eastern Conference Atlantic Division

The Atlantic Division is comprised of eight teams: the Boston Bruins, the Buffalo Sabres, the Detroit Red Wings, the Florida Panthers, the Montreal Canadiens, the Ottawa Senators, the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Many of the teams in the division are among the top franchises in the history of the NHL including the Montreal Canadiens who have won 24 Stanley Cup Championships. The Boston Bruins are the most recent current member of the division to have won a Stanley Cup, having done so in 2010. The Atlantic Division is in some ways new to the NHL after the 2013 realignment when the former Atlantic Division was renamed the Northeast Division and the current Atlantic Division was created out of teams the Northeast Division, the Southeast Division, and the Central Division. From the 2013-2014 season on look for the newly reconstructed Atlantic Division to be one of the premiere divisions not only in the Eastern Conference but in the entire NHL.

The Red Wings are well known for the Legend of the Octopus, a tradition in which octopuses are thrown onto the ice for good luck. The tradition dates back to the 1952 playoffs when four teams took part in the playoffs, and eight games were needed to win the championship. Each of the octopuses' eight arms represents one of the necessary wins. Al is a purple octopus who is the unofficial mascot of the Red Wings. These days 16 wins are necessary to win the Stanley Cup, so two Al mascots are hung from the rafters at the beginning of the playoffs.
