Devendra Banhart Background

Devendra Banhart was born in Houston, Texas, but moved to Caracas, Venezuela when he was two years old after his parents divorced. When his mother remarried, the family moved to Los Angeles, where Devendra was constantly surrounded by the burgeoning Californian music scene. He moved to San Francisco to attend college at the San Francisco Art Institute after high school, and while living in this vibrant and artistic city Devendra started to busk on street corners. He even scored a gig at a gay wedding, where he performed songs like "Love Me Tender" and "How Great Thou Art". In 2000, Devendra dropped out of school and moved to Paris, where he became a part of the local music scene and started to open for bands like Sonic Youth. After spending a summer in Paris, Devendra returned to the States and started playing gigs around San Francisco and Los Angeles, and was eventually discovered by the owner of Young God Records, Michael Gira. With Gira on his side, Devendra was able to get his name out in front of more fans and music industry personnel.
