Banhart was born in Houston, Texas, but moved to Caracas, Venezuela when he was two years old after his parents divorced.
When his mother remarried, the family moved to Los Angeles, where Devendra was constantly surrounded by the burgeoning Californian
music scene. He moved to San Francisco to attend college at the San Francisco Art Institute after high school, and while living
in this vibrant and artistic city Devendra started to busk on street corners. He even scored a gig at a gay wedding, where
he performed songs like "Love Me Tender" and "How Great Thou Art". In 2000, Devendra dropped out of school and moved to Paris,
where he became a part of the local music scene and started to open for bands like Sonic Youth. After spending a summer in
Paris, Devendra returned to the States and started playing gigs around San Francisco and Los Angeles, and was eventually discovered
by the owner of Young God Records, Michael Gira. With Gira on his side, Devendra was able to get his name out in front of
more fans and music industry personnel.
After releasing several albums to great critical praise, Devendra became one
