Born Thomas Wesley Pentz in Tupleo, MS, Diplo lived in a few different cities in the South, but spent his formative
years in South Florida. As a child, Diplo was fascinated with reptiles and dinosaurs, and initially wanted to become a paleontologist,
but he went on to study film in college. At this point, he had been exposed to a variety of different kinds of music while
living in the South, from Southern hip-hop to Miami bass. Once Diplo moved to Philadelphia to study film at Temple University,
he brought an eclectic musical perspective that he continued to carry with him. As a result, it was in Philadelphia where
Diplo began to gain notoriety as a DJ. While studying at Temple University, Diplo took a job as a social worker in the South
Philadelphia community, where he delved into the underground scene. He and DJ Low Budget, another DJ in Philly, decided to
start throwing their own club nights under the name Hooked on Hollerphonix in 2003, which thereafter became its own popular
subculture. Hollerphonix was so popular that it attracted huge crowds from all over the East Coast, and the two DJs soon released
Never Scared, which was a highly successful mix-tape that made it to The New York Times' top albums of 2003.
success of his 2004 solo debut Florida, Diplo was able to build "The Mausoleum," which served as his video studio, recording
studio, record label office, and even an event and gallery space. Various artists have since recorded at The Mausoleum, including
Santigold, Christina Aguilera, Shakira, and M.I.A. In fact, Diplo and M.I.A. enjoyed a long professional and romantic relationship,
after having met one night at a club in London. The pair collaborated on a mix-tape in 2004 called "Piracy Funds Terrorism
Vol. 1," and notably, they created M.I.A.'s Grammy nominated song "Paper Planes," which reached number 4 on the Billboard
Hot 100 Singles chart.
Diplo has since collaborated as a producer with numerous artists of different genres, including
La Roux, Robyn, Snoop Dogg, Bruno Mars, Die Antwoord, and much more, showing his extraordinary range. The famous electronic
dancehall project, Major Lazer, is also the result of a collaboration. Diplo was introduced to DJ Switch after having both
worked with M.I.A., and the two subsequently released a full-length album under the moniker Major Lazer.
label, Mad Decent, has also become a vehicle through which his cutting-edge music trends have been dispersed throughout the
world. From Brazilian baile funk to Angolan Kuduro, Mad Decent has helped transmit music to the masses, which was otherwise
unknown or had cultural and geographic limitations. Diplo is truly a dynamic artist, and his record label has signed and produced
such a wide range of musical acts, including Boy 8-Bit, Buraka Som Sistema, Rusko, and Bonde do Role.
In addition to
his musical career, Diplo has also added charity work to his repertoire. Heaps Decent was founded as a social relief program
to help children in Australia.
Diplo's Breakthrough Album
Diplo's multi-faceted career is constantly evolving
and exploring new places, but it was his collaboration with M.I.A. for "Paper Planes" that really put him on the map as a
producer. The smash hit featured a sample of the Clash's "Straight to Hell" and Wreckx-n-Effect's "Rump Shaker." The song
received praise in numerous music publications, won several awards, and was ranked the fifty-ninth most downloaded song in
the digital era. It was also shortly after this time when Diplo and his Paper Planes co-producer DJ Switch began working on
their collaborative project, Major Lazer, which was also a huge success for Diplo.
know the story behind Diplo's stage name?
Have you ever wondered what "Diplo" really means? As a child, Diplo was fascinated
with reptiles and dinosaurs, and actually wanted to become a paleontologist. Although music ultimately became his profession,
he adopted the stage name Diplo, which is short for the dinosaur Diplodocus.
