The Chicks, formerly the Dixie Chicks, are a country band from Dallas, Texas, formed in 1989 by sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer with founding members Laura Lynch and Robin Lynn Macy. They cut their teeth as a bluegrass act, busking and working the festival circuit for six years before Natalie Maines joined as lead vocalist in 1995 and the band signed with Monument Records. That move pushed the sound toward a mix of bluegrass instrumentation, mainstream country, blues, and pop, and it set the stage for the breakthrough that followed.
The commercial breakthrough came fast. Wide Open Spaces (1998) and Fly (1999) both earned RIAA diamond certification, making The Chicks the only country band and the only female band of any genre with back-to-back diamond albums. Fly debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and later albums Home (2002) and Taking the Long Way (2006) did the same, making the band the first female band in chart history with three albums to open at the top. Taking the Long Way, produced by Rick Rubin, featured all three members co-writing every track. The band went on hiatus in 2008, with Maguire and Strayer recording as the duo Court Yard Hounds, then returned to touring in 2016, shortened their name to The Chicks in 2020, and released Gaslighter that July, their first studio album in 14 years, produced by Jack Antonoff.
By July 2020, The Chicks had sold 33 million certified albums, making them the best-selling all-woman band and the best-selling country group since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991. Their live show runs on real musicianship: Maguire moves between fiddle, mandolin, and viola, Strayer between banjo, Dobro, and guitar, and Maines fronts the trio on acoustic and electric guitar. That versatility has carried The Chicks tickets through every touring era, from the first headlining Fly Tour in 2000 to the DCX MMXVI World Tour in 2016 and 2017 and The Chicks Tour in 2022 and 2023, with shows across North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
