About Don McLean
Folk musician Don McLean began work on his debut album "Tapestry" in 1969 during a tumultuous
time when student riots were regularly occurring and protests were the norm. The album was rejected a whopping 72 times, but
was finally released by Mediarts. The single "Castles in the Air" enjoyed success in the easy listening genre, but his album
at this time did not garner much attention. However, once Mediarts was taken over by United Artists Records, Don McLean's
music got the attention it deserved. Backed by the promotion efforts of a major label, Don McLean's famous second album "American
Pie" shot him to international fame. The record was released in 1971, and reached the number 1 position on the Billboard 200
chart, with the massively successful singles "American Pie" and "Vincent." The album was even later included in the book "1001
Albums You Must Hear Before You Die." Fortunately for McLean, the newfound interest in his music allowed his first album to
enjoy a spike in sales as well.
Don McLean's famous song "American Pie" is allegedly inspired from the untimely deaths
of musicians Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, and J.P. Richardson in their 1959 plane crash. The song has been voted in at number
5 of the best 365 Songs of the Century by the RIAA, and it was also the longest song to reach the number 1 spot, with a run-time
of over 8 minutes long. McLean's song "Vincent" was a tribute to painter Vincent Van Gogh, and was also an international hit.
The song reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, and peaked at the number 1 position on the UK Singles Chart. The song
was even covered by punk band NOFX and also singer/songwriter Josh Groban.
