Born in Rochelle, New York, Don McLean developed an interest in all genres of music by the age of five. He would spend countless hours listening to the radio and his father's records. In his formative teen years, he bought his very first guitar and took opera lessons. These lessons combined with many hours of swimming helped McLean control his asthma, which would later enable him to sing drawn-out phrases without even taking a breath! After playing local gigs around New York City, McLean got his big break with the 1971 hit single American Pie, a tribute to his late icons Buddy Holly and Richie Valens. Three decades later, American Pie was voted No. 5 in a poll of the 365 "Songs of the Century" compiled by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.
