Don McLean Background

Don McLean became infatuated with folk music as a teenager, and he purchased his first guitar when he was 16 years old. He was still in prep school when he first started recording in studios, so it wasn't a surprise to anyone close to him when he dropped out of college to pursue music full time. For several years, McLean made his way around the folk rock circuit on the East Coast, performing at events like the Newport Folk Festival and at venues like the Cellar Door in Washington DC. While working the folk scene, McLean made many contacts in the industry, which would eventually help him jumpstart his recording career. In 1969, McLean recorded his first album, Tapestry. Although the label was small and relatively unknown, it would soon be acquired by United Artists Records, which meant that Don McLean would have a major label record deal, which helped his second album, American Pie, achieve widespread success.

Inspired by the fatal plane crash of Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens, Don McLean penned "American Pie", which would soon become his most popular hit. The song quickly rocketed to the number one spot on the Hot 100, and to this day it still remains an iconic folk rock hit. The RIAA even took a poll about the top 365 songs of the century, and "American Pie" was ranked the 5th best song in that time period. There is no doubt that "American Pie" remains McLean's biggest hit to date, but he followed this phenomenal hit with other incredible folk rock songs. Now it's your turn to see Don McLean perform his biggest hits in concert, and you definitely don't want to miss out!
