Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium holds up to 50,000 rabid East Carolina Pirates fans for each and every
home game, and you would be hard-pressed to find a more exciting venue in which to enjoy some college football. It is the
third largest stadium in North Carolina and set a record attendance of 50,610 for a 2011 game between the Pirates and the
North Carolina Tar Heels.
In 1970 the Pirates defeated the Marshall Thundering Herd in a tight
17-14 game, but that was overshadowed by tragedy when the plane carrying the Marshall team home crashed while attempting to
land and killed all 75 people aboard the plane.
