About Dr. John
Musician Dr. John played as a session musician in the 1950s, but he started to rise to popularity
after the release of his album titled, "Gris-Gris," and his subsequent performances that included Mardi Gras inspired themes
and wild theatrics. His album "Gris-Gris" was a unique mixture of New Orleans R&B and psychedelic rock. At first it attracted
an underground following, but it was re-issued many years later to critical acclaim. Following along the same lines of "Gris-Gris,"
Dr. John released his second studio album, "Babylon," in 1968. Several similar records followed, like "Remedies" in 1970,
"The Sun, Moon & Herbs" in 1971, "Dr. John's Gumbo" in 1972, and "In the Right Place" in 1973.
Throughout his illustrious
career, Dr. John has received a number of awards and accolades including six Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Performance,
Duo or Group for "Makin' Whoopee," Best Traditional Blues Album for "Goin' Back to New Orleans," Best Contemporary Blues Album
for "City That Care Forgot," Best Blues Album for "Locked Down," Best Rock Instrumental Performance for "SRV Shuffle," and
Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for "Is You Is, Or Is You Ain't (My Baby)." All of Dr. John's Grammy Awards reflect his
ever-expanding range and talents as an artist, and he continues to raise the bar for other musicians. Representing the culmination
of his achievements, Dr. John was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.
Dr. John's Breakthrough
Musician Dr. John's gritty and bluesy tunes have had fans grooving since the 1960s, when he first started to
rise to popularity. This prolific star has released over 20 albums, and he has also been awarded six Grammy Awards. He is
perhaps best known for his song "Right Place Wrong Time," which still remains a popular choice among his listeners. He initially
began his music career by working as a session musician, known then by his real name Malcolm John "Mac" Rebennack, but he
soon took on the "Dr. John" persona, after becoming fascinated with New Orleans voodoo. After releasing his album "Gris-Gris,"
Dr. John developed a loyal fan base, and continued to expand his musical talents. When "Gris-Gris" was re-issued decades after
its original release, the album was included in Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time."
Dr. John's career in playing guitar was cut short by what event?
When Dr. John was defending some
friends, one of his fingers sustained a gunshot wound, which ended his career as a guitar player. He later started to focus
