About The Artist

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1940, Malcolm John Rebennack Jr. (Better known by his stage name Dr. John) is the eclectically styled musical artist who has brought his amazing hit singles and albums to the musical world ever since 1950, and continues to do so to this day. Dr. John's foray into music was a fast one, as he began taking music lessons and learning about the music industry in his teens, taking up the guitar and hitting the stage while he was still in school. He was also producing at a young age, but his music career was biggest on the stage in the 60's as his solo act began to explode when he moved to Los Angeles and adopted the moniker of Dr. John the Night Tripper. His debut album was 1968's "Gris-Gris" was an absolute success, and he continued on with the same style of music with albums like "Remedies", "Babylon", and more. He later altered his style slightly and took on the piano after an debilitating incident, with the album "Dr. John's Gumbo" being another highlight, although he would continue on creating smash hits for decades to come.

Breakthrough Album

For Dr. John it would seem that his biggest breakout success was his very first album, the 1968 "Gris-Gris". Showcasing a wild and eclectic style that combined psychedelic rock with New Orleans R&B. The album not only topped the charts but is also on many lists for best album of all time. This was his big break onto the scene, and it definitely wouldn't be the last time that anyone heard from Dr. John.

Dr. John Trivia

Every famous artist has something about that draws some kind of intrigue from fans and newcomers alike, be it their name, style, or something that they showcase in their live shows. For Dr. John, in addition to his stellar music and incredible skills as an artist, is voodoo. Voodoo lies deep in the mythology of New Orleans, and while much of it is based in the realm of fiction, it is interesting and intriguing nonetheless. An interesting concept and history of it's own, Dr. John has appropriated many things and aspects of voodoo and applied them to his persona, music, and live performances. In fact, Dr. John's namesake comes from an actual person in the 1800's who was mysteriously involved with voodoo and strange things such as scorpions and human skulls. In addition to this, "Gris-Gris", the name of Dr. John's debut album, is a name that is commonly associated with voodoo amulets that supposedly are used to protect the wearer from harm, a very fitting name for his debut album.
